So I have this new tanker M1. I did a pretty thorough check on it when I purchased it; gaged the throat erosion, checked the gas piston for binding, etc. Everything looked good, so I bought it.

Well, I went to do a function test on it, and discovered that I couldn't get a clip to load. It would go about 3/4 of the way in, and then just refuse to go further.

To make a long story short, the problem was the recoil spring being, I think, a Wolff (or other aftermarket) spring. Specifically, the spring was made of wire slightly thicker than the spec M1 recoil spring. So, when the spring was fully compressed (bolt open, loading a clip) the spring would be fully compressed before the magazine follower was all the way down. At the same time, the spring was rather light. I tried cutting it down one link at a time, and found that by the time it was short enough to allow a clip to be loaded, it was far too light to operate the rifle (just shaking the gun up and down will unlock the bolt and retract it slightly).

So...tomorrow I'm getting a new, to-spec recoil spring. Hopefully I won't find any more problems!
