I'd think real hard about the LPK for my accurate target type builds I use builders LPKs that don't have a trigger and then buy a Geissele trigger.
I usually peice my UPKs together and buy the door, forward assist and charging handle separate.
I should still be able to mount a gas block with top rail in front of it, right?
Yes. look at the Yankee Hill gas block folding sight combo I love it for this kind of build
If so, do I need the end cap?
no
Here's my Recce build 16" mid gas with Hogue mid length floating HG and YHM sight

OldBrownDog: Yeah, Jim Flynn is great. Love going there. Where have you "escaped" to?

mavracer: I might just install the trigger that comes with the LPK and then upgrade when more funds are available. My barrel came with a matching bolt, but it might be cheaper to buy the complete UPK and I'll have an extra bolt. Is there an advantage to buying these separately?

Lower Build Complete

I spent a little longer that I expected putting together my lower receiver, but I think I spent more time making sure I had the right parts than actually assembling it. It would be nice if the parts were labelled or at least if the parts were grouped together. I followed the book for the most part except for a few steps where I remember seeing a better way online.

Anyway, it's done and now it's time to turn to the upper. I have the Spikes upper receiver and Shilen 20" SS barrel.

I still need the following and I'm looking for suggestions/opinions. These are my initial picks:
Charging Handle: Vltor BCM Gunfighter (large size) http://www.midwayusa.com/product/615524/vltor-bcm-gunfighter-charging-handle-assembly-ar-15-aluminum-black
Handguard: Yankee Hill Machine Todd Jarrett Competition Free Float Tube Quad Rail Handguard (rifle length) http://www.midwayusa.com/product/94...ee-float-tube-quad-rail-handguard-ar-15-matte
Gas Tube: DPMS
Gas Block: Yankee Hill Machine Single Picatinny Rail Standard Barrel .750" Inside Diameter Steel Matte http://www.midwayusa.com/product/18...andard-barrel-750-inside-diameter-steel-matte
Bolt Carrier: DPMS or Kies Nickel Boron (this one I'm really not sure about, is there a difference?) http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Kies_Nickel_Boron_Carrier_NO_BOLT_p/kies-kcn.htm
Iron Sights: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/ar-15-m16-flip-up-dual-aperture-rear-sight-for-picatinny-rail?a=1593935 and http://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/ar-15-m16-flip-up-front-sight-for-picatinny-rail-gas-blocks?a=282520
Scope rings: ???

I'm a little concerned about the gas block. I'm afraid that it will be a different height than the rail on the upper receiver with not enough adjustment range to put the rounds on target. But, I think it makes sense to put the front sight on the barrel for better accuracy since the handguard is free floated.

Also, I'm not sure about the handguard. I'm not sure I really need the rails on the handguard since this is a target build. What would I put on there?

devils4ever,

If you were serious about competing in CMP service rifle matches, be careful with your front sight selection. This is quoted from their rulebook:

The standard A-frame front sight must be fixed in
the as-issued position on the barrel

Their intent is to mimic the M16A2 or M16A4 rifles used in the armed forces.
