First of all i know COMPLETELY NOTHING about shotguns

I do not hunt, but i mainly assume shotguns are mainly for hunting dove, quail and other birds maybe other animals,i havent a clue

My question comes from the fact when i go to the shooting range(i shoot a few handguns and 22 rifle),, I see shotgun shells all over the place...A shotgun shell being a ton of spreading pellets/bb's or w/e,how do you TARGET shoot with a shotgun?

What are these ppl using at the range with a shotgun?

My only knowlege of shotguns which may even be wrong is 410 weakes,20 midlevel and 12 guage most powerful

If i NEVER hunt could a shotgun still be fun or worthwhile for myself? If so how?

All info appreciated..Thanks

If you are finding shotgun hulls on a rifle or pistol range its
likely that folks are testing point of aim (important for both
slug shooters and shot shell shooters) or pattern density
at a particular yardage.
Target shooting with a shotgun involves the clay target games
like skeet, trap and sporting clays.
Shooting clay games is great fun. Hitting a moving target
and seeing it explode is a hoot.

Shotgunning is as much fun as one can have fully dressed, standing up. It has to be done right, though.

The hulls you saw could be from establishing Point Of Impact.

Or they could be from slug testing and zeroing, quite common this time of year.

You can hit Search.

Then,Advanced Search.

Type in "101" as subject.

Dave McCracken as author, though there's many authors there.

Hit Submit.

You'll find Shotgun 101, a complete guide for new shotgunners.

Enjoy.....

Most targets shot (at) with shotguns are small, flying-saucer shaped discs, bright orange in color. They get launched out of machines, or thown by hand with various throwers. Formal shotgun target games are called skeet, trap, sporting clays, etc. Although a lot of people take them far to seriously to ever call them games.

On a typical range, the empty shotgun shells come from people who are patterning their guns with shot, or sighting them in with slugs, or just shooting at various stationary objects on the range for fun. Lots of places discourage this practice, as shotguns can do serious damage to target frames, etc.

Details on shooting non-flying targets are here.

The shotgun is the Gerber Multi-Tool of the gun world. It's a poor man's nitro rifle, or a redneck golfclub, or a home security utensil, or a watermelon dispatcher, or a frisbee defense unit... this list is long.

So... as to fun and worthwhile... a shotgun is cheaper than a lot of 22 rifles, and is an ideal defensive weapon. If you prefer to remain informal, put a load of 00 into a pumpkin and tell me if it's fun or not.

EVERYONE needs at least one shotgun.
