Shot the new Savage 12 FV this morning, 26" varmint barrel, accutrigger, tupperware stock, everything just as it left the factory, haven't even adjusted the trigger which I am guessing is around 2.5 pounds. I have mounted a Weaver Grand Slam 6-20 scope in 2 piece Weaver style mounts and Burris Z Rings.

Conditions were not the best, temp ok around 78, but wind gusting 5-20 right to left from about 110 degrees. All shooting was with a bipod on the front, hard hold on the shoulder.

This was my factory load to try, Federal with 85 gr. Sierra BTHP Gameking. Not so bad, 5 shots in .899" c to c. It was actually the last target I shot and I had adjusted the scope to 100 yard zero.

This target has the 70 gr. Nosler BT, Hornady brass, CCI LR primers, seated as long as the magazine will allow (2.708"), charge weight was 45 grains, 45.5 grains and 46 grains of H414. 5 shot groups were .668", .897", .689", and in the last two groups I pulled one shot badly low, and one left. Best 4 shots were .435", .440" and .413". I'm quite happy with this load, I'm going to try this bullet in the Lapua brass with CCI BR primers next to see how it will really shoot.

I also tried some loads with the 95 gr. Berger VLD. These suck so bad I won't even show them. Even loaded to max magazine length they still have quite a jump to the lands. Berger says this is a no-no so I'll have to try hunting loads with the Barnes TSX and Speer Grand Slams I have on the bench, although the factory Federal load would also work ok for deer size game.

So far I've got $800 in the whole rig, and it's getting awfully close to being a 1/2 moa rifle. I'm thinking if I adjust the trigger a little lower, maybe bedded in a good stock... hmmmmm, just can't discuss it with the wife.

Nice looking targets! How do you like your Weaver Grand Slam? I've been on the fence but think I want one!

looks like a keeper to me,,,damn nice shooting

i have a ruger 223 that will shoot like that,, one ragged hole at 100yrds. doesn't shoot anything bad,, but when you start feeding it 53 and 55 gr bullets,,, deadly

enjoy the new toy man looks like you got a winner;)

As far as the Grand Slam, it's absolutely the best scope I have. I've got several Burris FFII'2, Nikon Buckmaster and Monarch, Leupold VX1 and 2, Bushnell 3200. Today I was also shooting with a Buckmaster and FFII and after shooting a group through the Grand Slam the other two really did not compare at all. And I have previously been a huge supporter of the FII scopes. It looks to me at least as good (if not better) as the Conquest I shot recently, really good contrast, excellent clarity and resolution all the way across the lens.

The only downside is you can't zero the .243 to 1000 yards without adding elevation, so you need to use the Z rings with inserts or a 20 moa base. With Natchezss.com selling the 6-20 in Silver at $279 I just couldn't see any other choice.

Mr. Browningguy, do you shoot at American shooting centers? i was there today as well, popping off my Saigas. I'd love to try out a couple of those handloads, in my tweeky remmy 788.

Yes I do Rangerruck, I was just on the 100 yard line trying loads yesterday and will probably be there again next weekend to try some other loads. I'll pm you.
