January 3, 2004 — Chicago police are searching for two people who may have been accompanying a 16-year-old that was killed when he pointed a handgun at an off-duty officer.
Police spokeswoman Alice Casanova says the officer was in his vehicle last night when he heard a series of gunshots coming from an alley in the 36-hundred block of N. Lavergne in the city's Portage Park neighborhood.
The officer spotted the boy and ordered him to drop the weapon.
But Casanova says the teen pointed the gun at the officer who then opened fire, striking him in the abdomen.
The teen was pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
Casanova says detectives are now searching for two people who may have been with the teen at the time of the shooting.
