I was tasked to identify an old pistol and had no idea how to go about it. I did a Google search with the patent numbers on the barrel and found this forum. Thanks to the generosity of those on this forum, I found out it is a S&W 38 (not 38 Spl), break top, double action, nickel plated, Fourth Model, probably made between 1895 and 1909.

Because none of the pictures in the thread I accessed looked exactly like the pistol, I took it to a gun dealer who confirmed the identification made by the members of this forum and said pistol's appearance differed from the posted pictures because someone had installed mother-of-pearl grips.

The wealth of information on this forum is astounding! Thanks for your help.
