The “Must Have” Cartridges

Virtually all of them are only a bigger case speced out for higher chamber pressure than others of the same approximate case size and bullet diameter.

Heck, alot of new cartridges are the same as an older chambering but a slightly shorter case and a faster twist rate to utilize the heavier bullets available. The 6.5 CM is just a slightly shortened 260Rem with a fast twist.

To me it is not about the cartridge but about the bullet. A deer won't know the difference if it is hit with a .30 caliber bullet shot from a .308 vs 30-06 vs 300 Win Mag. Each of those cartridges has advantages and disadvantages but they all can be loaded with the same bullet. So as long as you choose a bullet designed for hunting and make a good ethical shot the deer will die. And that goes for every cartridge on your list and many more that aren't listed.

Balancing bullet selection against target velocity and intended quarry is more important than what's on the headstamp.

A properly loaded 30-30 will be a better deer rifle than an improperly loaded 300 WinMag.

But certainly, a properly loaded 300 WinMag can do things the 30-30 just dosen't have the ability to do.

It will also handle a significantly heavier bullet than the .30-30, having mass to burn gives you some leeway in construction.

Maybe I am mistaken or misguided but I have always thought if a fellow has a .30-06, a 12 gauge & a .22 LR he has the tools to hunt pretty much whatever he wants to. Of course there are probably a lot of other calibers that could replace the .30-06 in that equation.
