A LONG time ago, I ran across a gunsmith in NJ, who was made up a wildcat cartridge, based on .30/06 brass , trimmed to .45 Colt length, and necked down to accept a cast .375 slug ) about 200 grains , I believe. )He said it was "inspired" by the old .38/40 , but made with the sturdier rimless brass; and that the .375 slugs could be driven faster than a .40 or .45 ,and with better downrange energy retention ( sectional density ).
He also made up a similar wildcat, based on the .45 ACP case, which he fired in a .45 ACP, fitted with a custom barrel. He claimed this was an improvement on the original as well.
The guy had a lot of interesting ideas - but no money - and he soon folded. I think he took a job with one of the big reloading equipment makers , as he was a skilled machinist.
Have any of you folks ever experimented with anything like this ?
