A few weeks ago I realized (accepted?) the fact that my aging eyes (58) needed new prescription lenses. When using open (iron) sights, I could hold windage fine, but had a problem determining whether the front post (as on my M1) was at 6-o'clock, or half-way up the 6" bull, or at dead center.

So I went to the doctor and got a new prescription. Unfortunately, I also learned that I am developing cartaracts (which I guess everyone does sooner or later), and although they are very, very small now, the one in my right eye is at the center of the sight axis. Great!

Well, I just got my new glasses - - and I can see!!! I can actually tell whether the post is dead center, or at 6-o'clock. I had the opportunity (unexpectedly) to take my recently received (CMP) HRA 1953 M1 to the range yesterday for just a preliminary evaluation - not much time and not the best weather.

I sighted the rifle in at 25-yd, which has never been a problem as far as seeing the target. After adjusting for the first shot that was off a bit, I fired the rest of the clip into one hole the size of a nickel just left of center.

Then I moved the target to 100 yards. The first shot was off to the left of the target paper about 1/2", so I adjusted the windage. I fired three more shots and looked through my spotting scope, but could only see one of the three shots, on the white, just left of the bull. So I adjusted to the right a bit more and shot four more rounds. Again, I couldn't see the darn holes in the black - actually, I didn't know if they were even there! So I stopped shooting and waited my turn to retrieve the target. (I also had to sight-in a new scope on my M1A so I decided to wait for better wheather to further tune the M1.)

I retrieved the target and I was pleasantly surprised:

I can hold elevation! This was using Danish surplus and resting the rifle on a plastic block, on the sling, just behind the sling swivel, and at the other end just my shoulder. I think this rifle has potential - look how well the last four shots grouped!
