At 3:46 (I checked :)) I turned on the tumbler (purchased yesterday); the first batch it's cleaning up is about 200 45ACP cases -- some of the once-fired brass that a fellow THR reader kindly sent to me, and which will become the honorary 1st through the system :)

This sure is a noisy device! I guess I should have anticipated that, given its nature as a bowl-with-a-motor, but that's how it goes ;) When I'm rich and / or famous, I'll get an ultrasonic doohickey, and trained pets to operate it.

Thanks to the advice from others on this board, I bought a biggish bag of corncob bedding as cleaning media; nowhere local seems to have walnut bedding at reasonable prices; the local farm supply store has cedar, and pine, and some varieties of bedding, but neither walnut nor corncob (and I wasn't sure whether there were any smart substitutes; in retrospect, the stuff they had for rabbits would probably have been good, but until getting the corn, I was even more clueless than I presently am wrt proper texture, etc.); the nearest pet superstore I know of (the only pet store at all, in fact) had corncob (that's where I bought mine), but the manager said the walnut kind never sold, so they stopped carrying it.

(I did stop in Gander Mountain between the farm store and pet store; they did have walnut, but at 16 or more dollars for a smallish box, which I decided to skip.)

In a little while, I'll actually have clean cases, for the next phase of the project ;)

Did you add anything to the corn cob or did you leave it plain? For best results you want to add some type of cleaner. Don't use anything with ammonia. I use Nu Finish car polish and it seems to work well for me. I add one cap full or a little less and a used dryer sheet cut into about 10 pieces. The Nu Finish will make the cases shiny and the dryer sheet will collect the crud and help keep your media clean. If you don't have a used dryer sheet I hear a paper towel cut up will also work. You can also buy walnut at Walmart. Sounds like you are off to a good start. Load safe and let us know how the first ones do.

I await reading Chapter Two.

Rusty nailed it with the NuFinish and dryer sheet tip(s).

As long as you're doing cases with large diameter mouths, the corncob pet bedding is okay. Just don't ever use it for small diameter brass, and never with .223!!!!!

You guys must be using the 1/4" corn cob. The 1/8" grind is much better suited to tumbling cartridge cases. A lot of pet supply houses don't carry the 1/8", but will order it for you, since it comes from the same supplier.

Hope this helps.

Yea, I found that one out the hard way with 223.

Did you have to dig into the packed cases with a pocket screwdriver and break up the chunks (times 100) like I did? :barf:

It was a while ago, but i remember it vividly.

It was the very first batch I ever tried to tumble, and I spent hours jamming that little f'ing tool into half the cases I tumbled. :banghead: I remember actually punching a hole or two into my hand with that sharp little son-of-a...........

All because I didn't want to pony up $16 for the good Lyman green corncob media. That stuff is great.

I used a drill bit. It didn't take to long but was PITA. I use walnut for 223 now and don't have any more problems. I am going to try the cob mixed with walnut on some 9mm and 45 cases. I have been reading where some people have done this and really liked the results.

Hey, this is good information, since I was thinking of tumbling some .223 brass a little bit later -- even though I don't have the dies or anything for that, never mind ammo, was just going to tumble for cleanliness. Guess I'll skip that for now :)

To answer a few questions: dryer sheet is going in for a 15-minute session, but I don't have any brass cleaner in there, No. I meant to get some at Gander Mountain, then just balked at the price of the media and left, forgetting about it.
