Here in Eastern NC we have an early rut with a lot of pick up breeding going on into December. Right now the deer are chasing like crazy and the big bucks are moving in the day. We are in the thick of gun season and this is the best hunting we will have all year.

We get two buck tags and both me and my oldest son filled one this week. My son got his first buck last night. He has been bow hunting since September but Hurricane Florence and the ensuing mosquitos and hot weather were bad for bow and black powder. So finally yesterday evening he was able to cleanly harvest a small 5 point. He is super excited and helped a lot with processing. It is only his third deer.

The gun used was a Savage 11 .308 win with 165 SGK hand loads. 85 yards through the heart and tore up the exit shoulder. DRT.

The hunt is still on and we have some big deer on camera but it always feels good to have the meat in the freezer. This is a preview for what most of the country will see in the next couple weeks. Happy hunting out there! Be safe.

Yes! Congratulations to your son! There is nothing better in the sporting world than taking young or new hunters to the woods.

Congratulations. It's good to get some meat in the freezer, but it is special when the youngsters help.

Here in northern Arkansas I am not seeing much from the bucks yet. Been in the woods a lot and am finding little sign and have few bucks on camera. I also checked with the owner and foreman of the farm and they are not seeing any chasing yet. They are out there all day, every day. I took a good buck but it was purely a case of hunting every day and being in the right place at the right time. I'll take luck over skill any day.
