The Great Comfort People Must Find In Being Oblivious

Well, whatever terms we use, for whatever the reasons, the fact remains that 90% of the population does seem to be "oblivious" to what is going on around them. Due to how safe our society is, it seems to work out just fine for pretty much all of them.

I choose a different path, but I know it probably won't ever matter, I could have been just as oblivious as everyone else with no ill effects...but that is not my way. Exception is driving...my awareness carries over to that and (knock on wood) I am 43yo and haven't been in an accident. I live in a large metro area and don't drive like a grandma either. Being oblivious behind the wheel results in lots of death, damage, and injury.

I take pride in being aware without everyone in this thread being able to spot it. That "smartphone look" is darn good camouflage.

"Carrying bags only in the left hand." Is not awareness, it's a training scar. You can carry bags in both hands, because the bags aren't important. Drop them. I love the many pics on google of people running from impending doom with a cooler or briefcase in their hands. LOLz.

This reminds me of the thread about not wanting to go to Canada because you can't bring your gun.

My dad always had two things that he always repeated, "Son, don't go down dark alleys and don't get caught up in crowds."

I'm no longer in the military or a cop so I no longer do these things, nor do I go to the mall for any reason; nor do I go shopping, the movies or restaurants after dark; and I won't go to Canada or Chicago.
I've lived in Chicago, been to Canada (12/11/01 was the last time), and as a retired cop I know the Sewers open up at dusk and the mall (though I have gone in the past, I went armed). No more. My first rule to avoid trouble is avoid troublesome locations and nightlife activities. My second rule is never to allow myself to be a victim, I've seen too many.
