In the past, whenever I wanted a gun I went to the gun store, pointed at it, paid, and came back later to pick it up. If they didn't have one in stock, they'd order it and that would add a week or so to the wait. That's all I know about buying guns. (OK, I also know that I can maybe get a used gun if I can find a seller to do a FTF transaction, but I've never done that and I'd prefer a new gun).

A couple of weeks ago I asked a dealer to get me a Ruger Single Six Hunter in .22 LR/.22 WMR with a 7.5" barrel. He said he would have it in a week or so - fine. However, the gun still hasn't shown up. Now it turns out that whatever distributors this dealer uses haven't got any Single Six Hunters. I called another dealer in my area and was told the same thing, although Dealer #2 said he would look around a bit. Apparently Ruger makes these things in batches and the last batch is all gone.

I've never been in this situation before. If my dealer says they can't get one until Ruger makes some more, should I just wait? Do dealers have some way of finding a gun sitting in somebody else's inventory and getting their hands on it? Or is there an easy way for me to do that? Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of time to spend on this search.
