Although not a rifle, this 686 has taken deer after deer over the years.

Again, not a rifle but a flint smoothbore. But see what it does!

My mighty stomper, an elderly Marlin 45/70; stomper for the deer it has stomped.

Now let's see if Photobucket did this correctly.

IMG_0081.jpg Here's another hunting rifle with a critter picture......Savage Mod 10 in 300 WSM with 3.5-10x Leupold....... Launches 150 gr. Nosler Accubonds at an average 3207 fps with IMR-4064. I would have thought IMR-4064 was too fast for that case size but the Nosler guys had it listed as "Most Accurate Powder Tested" for the 150 gr. stuff in the 300 WSM. They must be on to something........ It's my most accurate long range load for that rifle. Picture says it all.

IMG_1659.JPG Speaking of hunting rifles....... This is the new squirrel / small game getter that I picked up in late January. CZ-455 Varmint Thumbhole Fluted in 22LR . Then I spent over a month deciding over and finally getting a 2-7x Vortex scope in Warne rings all set up and zeroed. Only problem was by that time squirrel season was over. But it's a sweet shooter and a pleasure to use at the range and I'm looking forward to hunting with it in the future. Then maybe I'll have a picture of it with a critter.

My first hunting gun given to me in 1963 : a 1953 Winchester Model 70 .270 with 4x Unertl scope, still have it !

This cammoed Brown Precision .243 and this Mannlicher Scoenauer 30-06 served me well locally for deer and elk from late 70s till late 90s

I shot lots of odd guns for various hunts over the years and still do , these are the old standbys

from the 80s when I could afford to travel to Alaska, Canada, an Africa (once) these two were my fancy rigs : .224 Weatherby Mag lower and .300 Weatherby Mag upper.

My current go to do everything brace : top is 1999 Winchester .270WSM Ultraclassic Stainless and lower a 90s Rem 700 .375 H&H , both took my last trip to Africa and Alaska 10 years ago or so.

My current hunting rifle, finally got my dream gun about 10 years back; a Harry Lawson custom .308 Rem 600 , it now has a Zeiss HD5 2-10 on it that is smaller and lighter than the old Leupold

My savage 23D in 22 hornet. With original Weaver 344 scope and mount. That scope is a joke. I suppose it was state of the art back in the 30s but it is pathetically inadequate by today's standards. I hunt Tannerite with it.

KM77VTMKII.jpg DCP00840.JPG My "Lucky Gun"..... Ruger Mod. 77 VT Mk. III in .25-06 that I won in a gun raffle years ago. Shoots so well that I've never done much of anything to it but put on a Leupold 6-18x scope in Leupold rings. Never had complete satisfaction using lighter 25 cal. bullets but it loves the 115-120 gr. bullets. My now standard handload uses a 117 gr. Sierra Pro-Hunter fueled by Alliant RL-22 to about 3120 fps over the chrono with tack driving accuracy. Antelope picture is from 2003 (had to slip in at least one dead critter picture) and was a one shot deal (I spined him) at about 325 yards. That's pretty much my longest successful big game shot yet. Once had a guy ask if I was interested in selling it and I said, "Sure!..... just show up at my estate sale!".

This is the rifle that I played with last season. The most accurate of my 3 Creedmoors. This gun would shoot 4 different loads to the same POI and sub-moa. Who was it who said that it wasn't bragging if you done it. To be honest, I could have killed this buck with my GP. Max range 30 yards. While I have others, my "go to" hunting rifle is a Remington Model 7 in .308, set in an H.S. Precision sporter stock, with a Leupold Vari-X II 2-7x compact. It's a dandy woods rifle, capable of reaching out when needed.

IMG_1898.JPG IMG_1888.JPG IMG_1887.JPG Here's a pre-WWII Savage Model 23-D in 22 Hornet like that nice one Tark had in post #84. It's a nice medium range 'chuck gun. Short range is for 22LR's & head shots; long range I use 22-250 IMG_1896.JPG and up. The Hornet fills the in -between range woodchuck duties nicely. This one still has its original 1930's Wollensak 4x scope which still works quite nicely. The Savage 23-D was America's first production rifle in 22 Hornet introduced in 1932 and followed shortly thereafter by the Mod. 54 Winchester in 22 Hornet although Winchester was the first to begin the production of 22 Hornet ammo. Savage 23-D's are what I refer to as " THE FACTORY VARMINT RIFLE -- AS IT WAS IN THE BEGINNING" because it was the first in this country to chamber the Hornet, which is considered to be the first successful commercial varmint round. Once did an article on the 23-D that never got published but here's some pictures of some old Winchester and Savage factory ammo. The Savage box even mentions their 23-D right on the bottom of the ammo box. Once upon a time it was considered quite the varmint rig. IMG_0730.JPG IMG_0731.JPG

I did harvest one deer with this rifle.

I did not buy it new, but this was the outfit that sold it:

QRuFYUP.jpg

I still have the 4 X Redfield Widefield scope that I took off the rifle. I wanted more magnification, so I put on the cheapest 2 X 7 Tasco you could buy at the time. Even though it is a cheap scope, the Tasco works just fine. I did bed the action, put on a rubber recoil pad because the original hard plastic buttplate hurt. I installed an timney trigger, and with all that, it is great shooting lightweight rifle. It will shoot close to 1 inch at 100 yards, which turned out to be totally meaningless as the one deer I took with the thing was about 25-30 yards away. Hit it with a 125 grain soft point bullet, going around 3000 fps. That will do the job.

I zero'd the thing last year at CMP Talladega. I am going to claim the wide shots are due to cracked case necks, because it is a lot easier to blame the ammunition than anything else, like shooting ability. Ahem.... Still, that is a seven inch group at 300 yards.
