The Truth About Wildey

Hello everyone. This is my first thread, but I have been reading this forum for a little while. I looking for the truth about Wildey magnums. I am considering buying a Wildey Hunter .45 WIN Mag. I have read several conflicting bits of information about these guns, and considering the high price, I would hate to get stuck with a junk gun. Anyone who has any experience with these guns or the company, please let me know.

I would wager that any bad opinions you have heard are from people that have never shot or owned the Wildey. They are excellent guns and to make it even better you never have to search for that one load that works. The adjustable gas system allows you tailor the pistol to the load and not the other way around. That said, yes some loads will shoot better than others, but it is a serious option and it works. Are they worth the cost, that is a personal decision. I've not heard much bad from those who actually own them.

Wildey pistols have some problems. Hammer cracking and barrel extension failure being the ones I have had on my gun, and seen on a couple of others.
The hammer is pretty cut up for the mainspring, and strikes the back of the frame. A nylon pad glued into the hollow of the hammer with ears that fit between the back edges of the hammer and the frame can cushion the blow.
The barrel extension that the bolt rides in has a relatively small cross section for the forces involved in a rotary bolt gun. They can crack.
