Been having a lot of crappy weather, but on the nice days I do get out to hunt Turk I can't seem to get a single gobble. Today I had a hen come into my decoy. On the first day I hunted, I had a Tom come in, but he never gobbled. And of course not expecting him, he busted me.

Only other gobble I got, I tried to sneak out and set up my decoy, which of course got me busted. I hope you all are having better luck with turkey season. !!!

You are not alone. Crappy weather - alternating rain and snow combined with gusting wind - when out Sunday and Monday made for poor conditions. I did get a curious Jake come in during heavy snow when I wasn’t even calling. Walked around the decoy, walked right up and around me at less then arms length, all the while peering at me myopically, and then ambled off in no particular hurry. Can’t see him ever contributing much to the gene pool…

Yeah, I got right up on a deer today, but the Game Dept. would frown on me hunting them right now. Was kind of like, if you want to see deer, hunt turkey. !!!!

I hunted in Tn a couple weeks ago- first day the woods were nice and loud and I dropped a nice 20 pound tom. The next day, didn't see or hear a thing.

Hardly any gobbling here either. I saw turkeys every day that I hunted but the ones that I could shoot were either jakes or hens. Three toms came in silent on Monday and somehow they didn't see me. Excuse the crappy picture. 9" beard but he was a big bird.

Turkey hunting for me, has always been feast or famine. One day you can hunt from sun-up to sun-down and never hear a gobble. Next day, same area, same set-ups and you have a Tom gobbling his head off in the roost, that flies down in front of you and runs into the set-up. Or you call aggressively for hours and never get a response, stand up to get your decoy to move and you spot a Tom 60 yards away coming in with a group of hens......and you're busted.

My old turkey hunting buddy(been gone for a coup[la years now) always said Turkey hunting is all about "ups and downs". One minute you are depressed because you have heard/seen nuttin' or you spooked a Tom doing something stupid, and a half hour later you are woke up with a ground shaking gobble behind you and you barley have a chance to get your gun up before the "dance" starts in front of you. Kinda what makes it so fun.......

It seems the season always opens AFTER the start of gobbling. At least in Florida.

I didn't see or hear a gobbler this Spring but I saw plenty of hens in the thick stuff where they were laying eggs. My 9-y.o. grandson wanted to shoot one of them but I stopped him before he could get us in trouble.

i only hunt cloudy- light rainy days and have had killed alot of turkeys on them. on the day before i shot this one, it was sunny and in the mid 60,s and not a gooble. on the next day(cloudy with light rain showers) i shot this one, i had five goobles before daylight and called in two at daybreak and shot this one, 22lbs 9.5" beard.

That is interesting. I may have to try that. I've been avoiding all the cloudy and rainy days.

We have a month and a half long season, which I've assumed because you don't know for sure when they will start. Some years they will be active just before season, some years later. This year they really don't seem to be active yet, or nothing like usual. I do seem to be seeing more hens, and wonder if they are laying already.

No luck at all here. Season runs from April 2 through May 15, which is Sunday. But I'm done. I went yesterday for the last time this year.

That's the almost the same as our season, we have April 1st to May 31st. I'm going to keep on trying. I just like being in the woods, but there comes a time after hunting hard for weeks that I kind of think I deserve a shot! But I may try some crappy days as eastbank mentioned, instead of just waiting for good weather/days to come along, which has been far and in between lately. !!
