The thing that stands out for me in the start of that film is how the local new mexico (?) cops have their reloads in cartridge loops on their belts "old-west" style. Kinda adds a bit of class to the uniform if you ask me.
My favorite:
The hero's have driven the ants underground in the desert with WP rounds fired from bazookas.
They put on aluminum fire suits and move in with gas grenades to the rim of the entrance to the nest.
The ants suddenly appear just below.
Arness starts throwing grenades and Whitmore opens fire with his 1928 Thompson.
Separate the scene from the sound track at this point.
On the sound track Whitmore's Thompson is making a slow, hesitant, stuttering sound: POP POP POP (pause) POP POP POP POP (pause) POP (pause) POP POP.
On the film, the Thompson is absolutely SPEWING out a solid stream of brass, in one long burst.
Ah, they don't make them like that anymore. Today they're all blood and gore and no real suspense or excitement.
Wasn't it "myterious island" where the giant crabs are advancingand the kindly old scientist asks the dashing hero "you know how to handle an M-1 rifle?"
Amen brother.. you're going to need a whole BUNCH of clarified butter.
