First off, this is a thought experiment, nothing more, and I will not be doing this in the real world.....
I have a nice, accurate, soft shooting plinking load for my Savage 111 Pre-accutrigger 30-06, it's 17.9 grains of Trail Boss under a Hornady #3020 130 GN SP, using a CCI BR-2 Large Rifle primer for ignition
Here's my thought experiment.... Since I have far more Large Pistol primers than Large Rifle primers, and since this load is basically a low-pressure handgun load, why not use a Large Pistol primer instead?
Now, before you shout me down, remember that this is a thought experiment only, I know using pistol primers in rifles is risky, due to the possibility of over pressure, primers backing out, or even pierced primers due to the thinner cup
Our of all of those possibilities, the only one I can see potentially happening to my plinking loads is a pierced primer due to firing pin striking too deep and rupturing the primer, but how likely is that, especially since the primer is seated just slightly below the case head (yes, I did put one primer in an empty case to see how deep it sunk, I would say about the depth of a few human hairs, it's not flush with the case head, but it's not horribly deep either
Again, this is a thought experiment, I have just deprimed the test brass to be on the safe side anyway....
