I thought it prudent to keep a public list of items that prove that not all is lost in California with respect to firearms owners' rights. While CA is definitely not as free as was prior to the 1989 Stockton School Shooting and the avalanche of politically-driven efforts to control guns that has followed, there are a huge number of us that have chosen to stay and fight with some successes:

* SB 249 ("Assault weapons -- Bullet buttons.") Bill was removed from Assembly Appropriations Committee's Calendar. August 15, 2012. Ref: http://www.guns.com/2012/08/15/calif...t-button-dead/

* US Senate rejects expanded gun background checks and modern sporting rifle ban. April 17, 2013. Ref: http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/17/politi...ate-guns-vote/

* SB 47 ("Assault weapons -- Bullet buttons") failed deadline pursuant to Rule 61(a)(11). August 30, 2013. Ref: www.crpa.org/sb-47/

* Permanent injunction issued against AB 962. (Ammo restrictions.) November 6, 2013. Ref: http://www.nraila.org/legislation/st...trictions.aspx

* Gov. Jerry Brown's veto of gun control measures: AB 169, AB 180, SB 299, SB 374, SB 475, SB 567 and SB 755. October 11, 2013. Ref: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...l-legislation/

* Richards v. Prieto (Removing the need to show "good cause" when applying for a CCW permit in CA.) March 5, 2014. Ref: http://www.sacbee.com/2014/03/05/621...d-weapons.html

* CA Senator Leland Y. Yee a strong gun control advocate was arrested by the FBI on March 26, 2014 on charges related to public corruption and gun trafficking. On Friday, March 28, the CA Senate voted 28 to 1 to suspend Yee. Refs: http://www.latimes.com/local/la-me-y...,3801978.story http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local...252887921.html

Stockton IS an aberration. We will move forward. Keep the faith
Corrected it for you.
I lived there for 20yrs
Best day of my life is when I was finally able to transfer and move out.

But its a long slow battle

I live in Sacramento and I can tell you that it feels like we are winning here (if you are paying attention). 5 yrs ago there was a dozen permitted carriers here in the capitol and now there are several thousand and dozens more each day. Gun stores are popping up like crazy everywhere and advertising prominently. There are several large billboards advertising a Lodi gun store right on a major freeway, and nobody is throwing a fit about it.

A popular Sacramento gun shop is also running ads on all the popular local radio stations....things are changing around here.

The local IDPA club had to start an "intro to IDPA" class for new shooters, because of a massive influx of them since Sandy Hook.

Most of the court cases being fought here are going our way. Organizations like the Calguns Foundation are really throwing their weight around and knocking down the stupid laws like dominoes.

Some people in other parts of the country have written off CA as a loss, which IMO is foolish. CA is the front line in the war, folks. We are changing things for the better as far as the 2A goes.....please remember that and remember to support orgs like Calguns who are making a BIG difference for us here and ultimately, everyone in the nation. I give them $10 a month and consider it worth every penny. I may up my contribution if my finances improve next year.

Don't hate CA......it is a big state. We are more than SF or LA.

^Wow! It sounds awesome! If I was 20 years younger, I'd move back. My wife and I will continue to visit bi-yearly . We both love San Francisco.

View of Downtown from Twin Peaks, about 1,000 feet above sea level. It was a great spot in the early '60's at night, before the word got around! :D

Even in SF, I think a lot of younger people are seeing how ridiculous gun laws have gotten. The problem is there isn't much exposure for these people to firearms. I've lived here in SF since I graduated from college (UC Berkeley) and before that I lived in Redwood City. I try to take as many people shooting as possible, and everyone who's come with me has had fun.

I don't mean to go off topic but its related to ^^^

I think there is a fair amount of people that are realizing how over reaching the gov is being. For ex: the Soda ban a while back and just recently the city in MA that wants to ban cigs entirely in the city.

In a way, the more people that feel intruded by .gov, in any way, ultimately help us and is why we shouldnt alienate anyone.

Great posting, thanks.

I think it's important to note that the lawsuit against the 10 day waiting period being found unconstitutional doesn't go into effect until February 15th 2015. Kamala Harris (State Attorney General) has until that date to file an appeal. She's already asking for 12 months so that lawsuit is far from over.

And the whole case against the whole "Good moral" clause for obtaining a CCW, there's a question of whether that ruling will apply to the rest of the state or just San Diego county.

I won't have much hope for California until the AWB and magazine capacity limit are done away with. And the chances of that happening are slim and none.

I don't mean to sound like such a negative nancy but I've been living here long enough to know how the game is played.

We have a long way to go.

Getting a 2A sheriff in Sac went a long ways for CCW. Times I do listen to the radio sometimes I catch a ad for a shop/range in Modesto. It is ever so slow but things are getting a little better

As someone who lived in CA for over 30 years before moving to another state...

There may be hope, but you aren't offering much with that list.

Unless you have sucess with Pena v. Cid you are limited to a shrinking list of older handgun models that can be bought in CA. Come January 1st the "loophole" of out of state dealers reversibly converting semi-autos to single shots is closed. Even there, they seem to be adding ill conceived new restrictions faster than they can be fought.

Between the roster and the various "assault weapon" rules you will never be able to own most of the guns I enjoy, except by leaving the state. You can't even have crippled versions for the most part. That's a terrible shame because there are many opportunities for safe and fun shooting in CA.

After living in CA for 27 years, I appreciate reading the OP's positive list, and he's right that the fight is here. And there has been some progress, if not in the legislature, then in the minds of some residents about the overreach of .gov But having said this, I don't want "hope", I want results. I don't want us to have to claw back our Rights in courtrooms over years and decades while elected representatives can take them away nearly at will, year after year.

I am lucky to have a good job at the moment, and my kids have less than 3 years to go before college. Sometime in the next few years, it will be time to leave California. I will miss the physical beauty and the gorgeous weather, but I won't miss having my 2A rights treated like some dirty, inconvenient embarrassment to the establishment and persons opposed to Second Amendment rights around me.

Some people simply don't realize what "hope" is even though it's an important human virtue that's not to be confused or conflated with "results."

I have hope, I want results and I have realized them.

Thank goodness not everyone feels like you -- particularly those with hope who continue the good fight.

Be very careful where you move to. Once you retreat things do change in a person and you don't want to have to retreat again and again and again.

Red Wind,

Got any of those types of photos during your time in San Diego?

Sadly, not a one. In 1960, I didn't even own a camera. The memories are very much in my mind. But even a few black and white Brownie pictures would be nice.
