Thinking about an M1 Carbine again...

So would I!

However, the Universals and the Iver Johnsons are not that good. I honestly don't know about the IMI, I've heard good and bad, not enough to convince me.

The functional ones are the GI variety. Might be able to find a mis-matched (re)import that is not a collector's item... check out the gun shows for Carbine collectors. They will have or know who has. But tell them what you want, a shooter.

If you can find a good one for that price, go for it, they are fun to shoot, and with Remington 110gr soft points they can deal with varmits/pest as well for self defence.
You wont find many GI carbines for $400, Plainfields are good, stay away from Universals.

Good luck indeed. I got mine for $320, not counting the $150 I'm going to pay Fulton Armory when they get around to installing a new bolt for me.

Personally I think my carbine was worth more than that due to the immaculate bore, but then again the bolt did spontaneously disassemble itself during firing. Hopefully that was due to the sub-freezing weather and is not typical for M1 Carbine bolts!

Well, if it's a shooter and not a collectible, did you see the recent thread about Kahr's new M1 Carbine?

I have owned several carbines in my day and will never own another one.
unreliable
fairly inaccurate
underpowered/dimunitive round
If it is not for collector purposes, I think the perfect alternative to the M-1 carbine is the AK-47. Take that $400 and get yourself a Romanian SAR-1 and several 30 round mags. The SAR-1 is way more reliable, cheaper to feed, is way more powerful, cheaper mags, etc.

I got an IMI -- actually three IMIs -- the first two were defective. I used the third in a tactical carbine/pistol course and it was great.
Mine has an UltiMak scout mount, a 2.5X28 Leupold, and a cheap mismatched miltary sling. I used Winnie White Box for the course. I had only one problem, after 450 rds w/o cleaning I had a failure to extract. I cleared the chamber easily as the round fell out when the muzzle was raised. It continued to the end of the course giving exemplary service.
I did find that if you overlube the bolt it will splash oil onto the ocular lens of the scout scope. Next time I'll use TW25-b before the course.

I think Clint is right - the AK47 type is a lot more gun than the M1 Carbine. The M1 Carbine is cute and nostalgic and everybody loves em. We have one in the fambly that was a $19 NRA special. The GI carbines now are north of $600 and probably no end in sight.

Interesting that the entire carbine class avoided using the AK 47. We had 11 ARs, 1 MIa carbine and one Ruger P9. The Ruger took the reliability record with 500 rds and no failures at all. The M1 had only one failure and the ARs had many failures. I think a good AK would be reliable but they are a problem in CA and the safety is a bear to use quickly. The class requires the use of the safety. However outside CA the Ak would be cheaper to shoot. i think the M1 carbine is more fun to use and shoot. This is recreation for most people. The recreation has carry over lessons for SD however.

The Romanian receiver is stamped. I have one and I love it. Has had several thousand rounds put through it with only one cleaning after the first 3,000. Not the first malfunction...ever.
If you like the milled receiver versions, ARSENAL produces them. Extremely high quality Kalashnikov with handfitted synthetic furniture but nearly twice the price of the Romanian. If you get a Romanian, the only thing you really need to watch for is check to make sure the front sight post isn't canted.
Get yourself an AK, a couple of thousand rounds of ammo and have fun.

Paid $40 for my last one, a minty RockOla. One of my employees found out I liked guns, and brought it to work to show me. When I asked if he wanted to sell, he said he was his Granddads, but he would sell it for $50. I talked him down to $40.:D

My uncle used to have several M1 carbines he got from the military while serving.

Don't know if he still has them.

Mannlicher,

I know he's an adult, all's fair, etc, but if a friend or associate (especially a subordinate) offered to sell me his grandfather's M1 Carbine for about 1/20th its market value, I don't think I could live with myself if I took him up on it without at least informing him that he could almost certainly get much more elsewhere (maybe you did so). I can't imagine trying to talk him down another $10 - much less bragging about doing so. I assume this is someone you are going to see daily. I'm sure it'll do wonders for your working relationship (and his trust in you) when he finds out how you essentially stole it from him. I like finding (or negotiating) a bargain, but taking such extreme advantage of someone's ignorance (especially someone who knows and trusts you) seems like a little too much to me.

If a USGI Receiver M1 carbine is what you want, you can find the Imports around for $380-$450. These are USGI, but either Lend-Leased to another country or bought by them, then imported back to the U.S.
They are still a nice piece of history, and hold a spot in my collection.

Nice way to treat someone.:(

I've never done something like that without telling the person, The gun is probably worth $XXX but all I can give you is $XXX if you want to sell it for that.

Money just isn't that important to me to take advantage of someone.

You will be lucky to find a decent USGI M1 Carbine for $400. I've seen a few at the gun shows but they were in sad shape.
You will probably get in the $550-$650 range to get a decent GI or clone M1 Carbine.

Comparing the M1 Carbine to anything else is a waste of time.
I've got a nice AK and a bunch of M1 Carbines.
Both are great rifles for what they are.
Both are fun to shoot.

If you want a Carbine get a Carbine.

If you want an AK, get an AK.

The AK is a truck, but the Carbine is a sports car.:D

I am replacing the stock on the Underwood, since it had a chunk cracked under the recoil plate.

Very nice Inland:
