Thinking of swapping out Moss590 stock and forend for wood~ where might I start?

Okay, after several months (maybe a year) of doing the BA/UU/R drill I have decided that I might replace the synthetics fore and aft on my Mossberg 590 GR. I simply don't like the horrible ridged forend and would also like to shorten the LOP by an inch.

I have danced around the idea of getting the Hogue overmolded forend/12" stock setup. I know I would be extremely pleased with it. But something draws me toward looking into an altenative in wood. (I could care less if my 590 is all black or not.) I guess it goes back to my love of rifles and revolvers that are blue steel and wood. (Awright... don't go down the anodized aluminum reciever road! )

So my dilemma is (1) Hogue Overmolded which I would be pleased with, or (2) finding a knockaround Mossy wood stock that I can shorten by an inch and reinstall/reshape the recoil pad. Plus a wood forend that might feel better than the sharp-edged one now on my shottie. IOW, can wood compete with Hogue Overmolded?

Opinions are welcomed ( and a picture or three would be appreciated)!

If all else fails you can get new wood from the factory. AFAIK Mossy uses beech/birch for all its furniture now, stained dark to look more like walnut. Black is not always best necessarily, wooden furniture looks less 'offensive' than black plastic. But in harsh/wet conditions, plastic is better IMHO.

Check places like Numrich/Gun Parts etc, sometimes they have bargains...

I am thinking of doing the very same thing. Will a 500 forend fit on a 590?

I have the Houge 12" LOP. Before you buy it understand that it is very short. You have to be careful or you will get a thumb into your lip pretty bad.

Also the stock drop is not right and your ability to aim will be affected. You have to learn to place the stock up on your sholder much higher than you would normally.

It won't see duck hunting weather (it's a Personal Protection/Home Defense shotgun) so synthetic is not an issue. It resides in my home or my vehicle. And stained birch is fine by me.

FYI it is 14" on mine. I wish I could just go 1" shorter instead of the 12" Hogue Overmolded being 2" shorter.

That is another reason why "I think I wood prefer would".

What about in the other direction? Is there a way to get the Mossberg to have a 16" LOP? I'm 6'9" and the current models just feel a bit too short.
