I am going to do three things: (1) write my congressperson; (2) be more open about my gun views; and (3) write a check to the NRA-ILA.
1. Write My Congressperson
Dear _____:
I am contacting you in light of all of the gun issues recently in the news. I ask that you do not vote in favor of any new gun regulations/bans. Additional gun laws - in addition to those already on the books - would not affect anyone but law-abiding gun owners and future gun owners. Instead of passing laws that won't change the behavior of criminals, there are other laws/policies that could (i.e., prosecuting criminals that break current gun laws, adding security to schools, funding states to make sure that the criminal background database is updated). Moreover, I keep hearing about passing "commonsense gun laws," but we already have those (regulations on full-auto guns, background checks, felons cannot possess firearms, etc.). Finally, this issue involves a constitutionally-protected right, and therefore, is much more sensivitve to a lot of people, including myself and alot of my friends and family. We have the right to choose what firearm is necessary for self defense, defense of family, hunting, and sport shooting.
Again, please do not vote in favor of any legislation that constitutes additional restrictions/bans on firearms. Thank you, and I hope you and your family have a happy holiday.
2. Be More Open About My Hobby And Position
I know everyone's circumstances are different. For me, I work in a big city office and I am going to, in a positive way, start being more vocal about my hobby and corresponding pro-gun views. I've taken co-employees out for trap and pistol shooting; next time, I think I'll let them shoot an semi-auto rifle. I'm going to try to get my girlfriend's friends out shooting for the first time (I have a few .22 pistols for this). I don't like telling everyone I have X, Y, and Z guns at my house, but I am no longer going to tell everyone about my unfortunate boating accident wherein I lost all of my firearms. I might even bring in some deer sausage to work and buy some pro-gun T-shirts to spark the conversation. Again, let me underscore that this is to be a positive painting of me and others like me that are pro-gun.
3. Write A Check To The NRA-ILA
I am a life member of the NRA, but I don't give them money all of the time when they call or send mail. However, I think this time is different and I am going to write them a check. I have the funds anyhow because the prices on gunbroker are crazy and Cabela's is all sold out of semi-autos.
