Anyone else shooting a TC Hawken? I put together a kit back when I was a teenager and it's been my deer gun since. It will keyhole 3 rounds at 100 yds using a Maxi Ball and 80 gr 3F. Never had pyrodex or any other BP sub through it.

I have been shooting my .50 cal TC Hawken since the 70's. I think it is a great rifle and solid as a tank. I am very pleased with it.

Yep, I was a teenager in the 70s! LOL. I think I built mine in '78.

I got one from a friend as an incomplete build (he got it at a yard sale) After a visit to track of the wolf for some missing parts, I sanded and stained it....and almost
a year later finally fired it. Ended up having to change out the sights.( now it wears hi-vis fiber sights) It shoots great. using a heavy minie bullet and 120 grains of FF....kicks like a mule but groups at 2 inches for 3 shots at 100 yards.

I assume you mean cloverleaf and not keyhole - keyhole refers to the elongated hole made by a tumbling bullet. Not a good thing.

My T/C Hawken shoots maxi-balls with 75-80 gr. of 3FG real good too. Never tried round balls in it even though I've had it for ~35 years.

Yes I do but I've always called that keyhole. At least you knew what I meant!

Actually I didn't. I thought at first your post was a complaint about a T/C Hawken shooting conical rounds, causing the bullet to tumble and subsequently keyhole. Then I thought maybe that's not what you meant...

My .54 caliber TC Hawken works just fine. Pyrodex brought this one down.

My T/C Hawken is a .50 caliber percussion. I got it from a buddy about 25 years ago. It was a Safe Queen for many years until I retired and joined a BP club.

Now I shoot it at least once a month at our BP matches. I use a .490 round ball with a .010 patch over a 65gr load of Pyrodex.... It is a great shooter!

I truly love my Thompsons Hawkins .45, that I bought for $95.00 from a guy I used to work with. The gun looked to be like brand new, until I got into the barrel. Talk about rust and crud, needless to say I finally got it all removed, and don't believe it did any permanent damage to the lands and grooves. I shot it out to 100 yards with the maxi balls and it put them all (three) into a nice group measuring 2 3/4" at point of aim. I do like the set triggers on the rifle, and the ease of removing the barrel for cleaning.:)

Nice pics guys, guess I should post one of mine since I'm the one that started this thread! :D

From a kit I put together in 1975. I shortened the stock to fit me. The barrel is a 32 inch H&H match grade.

My old style stocked one, the barrel is a .45 caliber 1:48 32" Orion, nicely figured wood and accurate as they come.

No longer have a harken but have 3 renegades (50, 58, and 56 s.b.), two Seneca's (32 and. 36), a Zouave and a pair of pricey pedersolis....72 and12 ga. All fun. A couple just about as deadly on either end.
