I've had my Saiga for about a year now, and decided it's time to mount a red dot. My friend has an Arsenal AK with that side mount black/red dot contraption, but it sits too high and off to the side for my liking.

I *think* something low mount would work best so I can get a decent cheek weld. Those of you that mount optics on your AK, please give advise before I consider buying this. My eyes aren't the greatest, and I already have red dots on my HiPoint carbine and CZ Kadet.

BTW I'm a little confused on the description. They seem to have two versions, SVD mount and AK style.

I'm using a similar mount: the Belorussian BP-02. I modified mine by removing the rail and mounting a 30mm ring directly to the frame. That got the red dot (PK-23) even lower.

It works pretty good. One downside is if the mount is too low (like the BP-02) you'll have to dismount the scope in order to clean the rifle.

I'm wondering if you'd be better off with the Kobra red dot mounted directly to the side mount.

the Weaver rail seam to unnecessarily add to the overall height.

I have a bunch of the BP02s, and they are pretty darn low - about as low as you can get in a generic mount that's not optic-specific.

I actually don't think that mount will work. It appears to be about 1/2" shorter than the BP-02 which already sits less than 1/4" above the dust cover.

I believe that particular mount is made for SVD's, PSL's and the Saiga 100 series which all happen to have their rails mounted about 1/2" higher on the receiver than typical AK's do.

I looked at those and decided the UltiMAK gas tube optic mount was a much better piece.

That's what is confusing me about the description. It plainly states there's one for the SKS/SVD, and the other for AK and variants.

The AK ‘V’ clamp can easily be mounted to any of these rifles with the standard side rail: AK-47, AK-74, Vepr, Saiga, K-var, KBI, Hesse, Century and Arsenal USA copies, Romak1/2, SLR-93, SLR-95, SLR-101, MK-11, SAR, WUM, SA85M, WASR (check for installed rail), Maddi, Norinco and Poly-Tech copies. The SVD/SKS clamp will fit any of these rifles with the standard side rail: SVD, SKS, NDM-96, Russian Tigr, Romak-3, SSG-97 and PSL rifles.

Here's how I see it. That mount looks about 1/2" shorter than the BP-02, which just clears the dust cover by about 1/8". The mount pictured below it appears to be the BP-04 which will sit about 3/4" above the dust cover.

Now, if I mount my BP-02 on my PSL, it sits about 2/3" above the dust cover, so I imagine that the mount pictured in your link is a low mount for SVD/PSL/SKS type rails.

I would simply order a BP-02. They're good solid mounts and you won't have to wonder whether you ordered the right one or not.

Also, look at the side views of the BP-02 that Briansmithwins posted. You can see in those pictures that the BP-02 just barely clears things, yet it also has an extra 1/2" of so of rise to it.

IMO, I think you need to take a look at the Kobra red dot scope from Tantal. It comes with or w/o an integral side mount. It mounts low on my Saiga and works great. About $200. You can buy the BP02 mounts from Tantal also, but I don't see a reason why you should.
