Waiting

Now waiting for my Uberti 1858 Remington New Army .44 and cartridge cylinder.
Ordered it today from Taylors.:)

"What makes them new and improved?"

Because they are old and funky?

The old past is the new present. (Or something like that)

"Everything is Vanity"

On the Uberti website it says this model has a "forged" barrel and frame. My understanding is since Pietta used the phrase new army, Uberti coined the phrase new improved army. About all I'm sure about at this point.

Straight-Shooter:
I've had mine for a while now. I couldn't believe how "butter-smooth" the action is.
Fitted her out with a set of "hot-shot" nipples and supplied her with a diet of pre-lubed and sized lee conicals. The conicals are very easy to load and very accurate. Anyway, this Remy is a keeper. good luck.

I will try the conicals as I have the same mold by Lee. I'm looking forward to shooting these new irons but work has been hectic to say the least. I've got 3 revolvers that need christened for the first time out.

Thanks for the tip on the hot shots as I'll look in to those. I have a set of Treso's on order for the Walker I just acquired too.

Received my 1858 from Taylors along with a 45 Colt 6 shot cartridge cylinder as well as the cap and ball cylinder. Loaded it up and shot several rounds 6.5 G Win 231 behind 250 G lead projectiles 2 hands un rested @ 30'. I had a great time.

I have a Euroarms .36 1858 Remington Navy, 6 1\2" barrel and a conversion cylinder. Although out of production it is the size of the originals which were a smaller frame size. Put side by side with my Pietta 1858 Remington it is noticeably smaller, more like 1851 Colt size. I have a Uberti 1860 with navy grips and the 3 most natural pointing BP revolvers I have are the above mentioned 1860, 1858 .36 Euroarms Navy and my 2 ASM Colt 1851's. The worst for natural pointing are my ASM Colt Walker and Euroarms Rogers & Spencer.

From Dictionary.com:

3. the act of sprinkling, as in baptism.
4. Archaic. a shower or spray.

DISPERSION

I really don't want to be caught up in keeping track of who still has or does not have what guns - I'm not the government, after all.:barf:

I humbly stand corrected. I used to get in trouble using elegant words. As a side line, I once told a girl that She was "meretricious" when I should have use the word "meritorious"

Okay guys heres mine. Not fancy but ive broke her in real well. Navy Arms 1858 Remington C&B. Its been a project gun and an intro to cap and ball. Im now eyeing a stainless uberti 1858 for christmas. Lol. That with a black grip would be SWEET in my opinion.

oth my '58 and I are well broken in to BP shooting. The past 3 yers has taught me a lot and provided countless hours of fun and relaxation!
Aside from the hobby spect of BP sooting there is a pratical side, these are NOT toys and cabe counted pon for serious applications! Back in the old days they served their owners well and loadingprocedures learned can make these revolvers quite dependable. Different tricks for different guns. The Colts seem to be less reliable than the Remingtons do. Caps stay in place in the Remingtons full frame andmaybe it's justamisconception, but the Remington seems to load easier, Perhaps it;s the larger groove for loading the balls or maybe it's the added advantage of mechanical pressure the loading handle gives, but I seem to be able to charge and load the Remington faster.
The Colt lays lower in th hand and closer to the line of sight but the slight raise with the full frame distracts little from your sight picture. The Remingtonjust feels stronger and more positive in the hand. It also comes closer to mimicing the profile of the beloved Peacemaker!
The sights are larger and more easily picked up. Once aquired, the wide groove keeps the picture better too.
I havedeveloped a consistant load for both GP shooting also I think it would suffice for "social work" too.
35 grains of Pyrodex aa felt wad and round ball touched off with Remington caps complete the load whic is both powerfull and accurate. In my experiences with the pair of '58's I own, this load is the best all around charge for the revolvers. One needs filler, one dosen't Go figgure eh? I don't know why but this is the way it's worked out.
For a short time I had a .36 Remmie, but I found it heavier than the .44's and even though smaller, it didn't handle as well as my 5 1/2" revolver (?). I sent the poorly functioning revolver back to Cabelas and never want another .36!
I had the chance to fire some 250 gr cst lead Conicals through the 8" and found them awsomelly powerfull!
Recoil was very stout and impacts were notabily heavier. Accurcy was on par with lead balls but I am sure overall the preformance of these heavy cast bullets is well worth the cost and effort to manufacture and shoot them!
I am not equipped to produce bullets or have the ventlated area to do so.
A friend loaned me his conversion cylinder and a huge handfull of Scoffield cartriges to test.
WOW now this is "THE" load for the remington! Low recoil. heavy bullets and more than adequate ft lbs of energy! What a perfect load for the cartrige shooter!
Generally, I am more than pleased with mypurchases of the Remingtons. They have proved reliable, accurate and just plain fun to shoot!
I can see how the oldtimers depended so heavilly upon them for their way of life! There's simply no other revolver that fills the bill in so many circumstances. From putting sick stock down to Indian Fighting, these big revolvers willfire and continue to fire as needed.
My only complaint is the heavy hammer pull. It takes a hard hit to reliably ignite a cap and Remington chose to install a very heavy spring to ensure ignition. There'll be no fanning with a Remington C&B revolver! Heck you shouldn't anyhow!
ZVP

Well, it doesn't have to be that heavy and the nips will last much longer if it isn't. Also, the other internal parts wont take a beating because you are having to overcome the force of a too heavy spring. I agree with you about fanning them. It's "gun abuse" unless it's set up for taking that kind of treatment a la Brushhippies videos (lol)! I will say, set up like that, they will last seemingly for ever (if you shoot it normally and keep the fanning stuff to a min.) . Not to mention, the Colt types will shoot 100 rounds or more without binding with this set up.
