I'm the aforementioned "new guy".

Hello, all.
I am the new guy that kbob referred to this club. I am gonna do my best to post a pic of my baby. Honey bunny bought her for me for Christmas! I hope I can join your ranks.

I have been looking at 1858s for a couple of years now, been on my list of guns to get but haven't had the opportunity to get a good one at a good price. Well my father decided to surprise me this Christmas with a new Uberti SS model. I actually would have liked a blued model but the stainless is really growing on me.

I haven't been able to shoot it yet, plan to stop at cabela's over lunch break and get some .454 round balls and some lubed wads. I have FFFg black powder at home and some no. 10 and 11 caps so I can experiment and see what works best.

bummer

went to the range the other day. took my Pietta buffalo out along with a couple other bp guns. a trio of youngsters next to me couldn't get enough of the dueling pistol or the hawken, so I let them shoot all 3 of them. then I dug out the Buffalo, loaded it up, and handed it to the young lady of the group. I think we have a convert.... so after loading a couple of cylinders for the three, I figured I would show them how it was done. We were on the 50 yard line and they didn't do so well with the pistols (as expected).
Imagine my surprise when after loading and getting set to shoot, I discovered that the darned adjustable sight insert had fallen out. no luck finding it. guess I'll have to either get a piece of shim stock or find somebody that sells replacement parts.

Looked at my original post on Page 2 and discovered the photo hosting site had ditched my pics. The group has grown anyway,so time for an update.

Soft lead home cast. Same accuracy as my ROA so far. Although I had a stainless ROA that would shoot as good as friends s$w 44 mag. Now I'm in two clubs, and never been much of a club man.all on 1/5/15

I have a Kirst gated convertible. I just wish there was a practical way to use the gated Kirst in the 5.5" barrel Remmy.

sorry, I SUCK at pictures....

You don't have to... Just follow some tips. :)

Don't take pictures with a cell-phone (if this is what you are doing). Use a real camera. It doesn't have to be an expensive one and the picture quality from the lowest cost kind will be much better then you can get from any phone.

Go outside: The light is more even. An ideal time is when the light is slightly hazy. In bright sunlight set up in the shadow of something large, like a building. This will prevent or reduce harsh shadows.

Mount the camera on a tripod, or at least brace or rest it on something.

Don't get too close, unless you have a camera with a macro setting. Without this stay at least 4 feet away from your subject. If you need to make a close up do it by cropping the picture, not by getting too close.

One of the joys of digital photography is that you can take a zillion pictures and not have to pay for film processing. So go practice.

Agree with "Old Fuff".

On outdoor shots, wait for an overcast day with sun staying in the clouds. Use the back deck floor for background. I go to Home Depot and buy 12" square linoleum tiles in different styles, wood-floor, black marble, etc. For sharp photos, tripod is mandatory. If you do not have a remote shutter (cord) release, go into your camera's menu for "self-timer" and use that. Use at least a 5 second to 10 second delay to allow the camera on the tripod to "settle down" before the shutter is tripped.

If your lens has a "vibration-reduction" ("image stabilization") switch, turn it to "off". You don't need it when using a tripod.

Unless you're going to invest in a macro lens or a lens that has a macro feature, you can buy an inexpensive set of "close-up lenses", which are actually screw-on filters. They come in three magnifications, usually about $50 per set. They allow the camera to get closer to the subject without moving the tripod.

If you want to get into editing photos, there are a few free applications out there, like Google's "Picasa" and "ACDSee". If you want to spend a little money, buy the latest version of Photoshop Elements, just don't get in over your head on it.

If you want to do it indoors and willing to invest in less than $100 for "professional results", go to Jim Cooper's thread at Blade Forums. Jim is a professional photographer for custom knife makers, and see how easy you can improve your images.

Go to: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/328550-No-Frills-75-00-home-studio-tent-lightbox/

If it is a measure of success, this thread is almost ten years in running, and showing other methods, some more expensive than $100. But Jim's interested in the beginner photographer who wants to keep it simple and easy to understand, which it is.

Kinda like "O.F." said, film is cheap, but improving image quality is indispensable.

Hope this helps, I'm going to bed.

Too much of a Luddite to post pics, but I've got a stainless Pie-eater 1858 that I got from Cabelas back when they could be had for <$200 on sale, and one of the Uberti carbines that's just their 1858 with a long barrel & funny handle (the stock. It's a joke son, it's a joke! Aw, yer built too low to the ground, they're just sailing over your head... ;) )

Sign me up, if you please. This Pietta .44 caliber Remington 1858 just may be the most rewarding $210* I have spent on my meager firearms collection. It came with five or six dozen Hornady .454" balls and a like number of lubed felt patches. I only fired a dozen rounds through it so far, but it is certainly a hoot.

Here it is stripped down and cleaned after returning from the range.

*That is, plus the purchases of a pound of powder, a hundred #10 percussion caps, a powder measure with funnel, some Crisco, and a nipple wrench.

Here it is back together, all oiled up for storage. After fumbling with getting the caps seated on a winter's day, I plan to have it live in the safe until the weather warms up some. Once the vernal equinox approaches, I figure to take it out, dis-assemble and dry everything off, put it back together (a process I found quite enjoyable in its own right), and head out for some smokey fun.

Illustrious Bill,

(I hope that is what it stands for...)

Welcome, welcome. Nice looking NMA you have there. Some of the guys have opened up the slot in the rear where the percussion cap goes to make loading a little easier using the dreaded Drimmel tool.

Do have fun with that jewel.
