dickydalton,

Somehow I missed your post 'til now.

That etching is nice. Nice that even the spare cylinder is gussied up.

I will say that if it were mine I would be saving up for a set of those fine checkered faux ivory grips, if it is of a brand they are made to fit.

Cute spare cylinder pouch as well.

HI all,
I have a couple 1858 Remmies and a couple 1851 Navies

I have a conversion cylinder for the 1858s, and am thinking about getting one for the 1851s.

Can I join?

Found this one being tortured at a Cabela's ...

Poor thing didn't have a box and somebody had turned the cylinder pretty blatantly, the gun wasn't out .of time so they have an aspiring Clint Eastwood double on staff.... BUT they had these beauties on clearance and I negotiated a better deal because they did not have the box.... First BP revolver, first BP repro. Had one 209 in line before. Pawl and stop look fine, not used to the tiny bit of fore and aft play otherwise lockup seems in line with what my Colt .32 and Smith .45 do and they both shoot just fine.

When buying metallic cartridge conversion cylinders for C&B revolvers, keep in mind that the bore groove diameter may be oversized for the cartridge bullet.

To get acceptable accuracy you may have to handload using heeled bullets. :uhoh:

Hollywood movie makers don't have to worry about this of course.

I actually got mine to shoot BP with, have a really nice .45 colt Model 25. My dream conversion would be a Ruger Blackhawk with a conversion cylinder to shoot black powder. Now that would be my thing. Or even an ROA, for some reason I have no desire to shoot cartridges out of my new girl.

Currently this really only applies in the Navy revolver. Although if you do find a 44 Colt chambered cylinder than yes, Heeled or Hollow base.
Heeled is normally more accurate than Hollow Base.........

Here is a link to my tutorial on Heel Base Loading:

Naw...nothin's ever that easy. I had to make 'em.:-D What ya see is the solution. The problem is the 4 different jigs that need to be made, to hold the materials the parts are made from. Once the jigs are made, the parts are repeatable.
Gonna put it all onna disc...kinda like, how to do everything. Disc'll be free. Knowledge is for those who want it.

Very nice work Doak
Are you going to make these available for sale? I would like to see a longer hand for repair of originals?

Thanks Guys, fer the kind words!

Hafta give this stuff away. Pricing it would be a deal breaker. Absolutely nothin' cost effective about production. This one's a prototype. It works really slick, but it's a little oversprung. Prototype spring is .014'' thick. Gonna go down to .012'' thick, for the kill. Factory spring is .016'' thick, and a very different motion dynamic.

Can make the "hand" any length. Some spec's would be helpful.:-D

Recommend me sending y'all a disc showing/'splainin' the entire transformation of an 1858 Pietta into a fine shootin' iron: of which the replacement hand is only one part of the process. You'll get a feel for what's involved, & why attempting to price it makes ya wanna run away from home!

If you're interested, send me a shipping address & I'll get a disc to ya, prolly in about a month. Still gotta do some more text & fotos.

Kindest Regards,
Doak

I'm not aware of any parts being interchangeable between Pietta and Uberti. It may work with modifications though...

Iron Sight,
Never had an Uberti, so can't speak to the issue. Been wantin' to get my hands on one of their new generation forged frame specimens.

Kindest Regards,
Doak

Add me into the Club, please.

This is the Remington Deluxe Model made by Pietta in 1983 and imported by Navy Arms Company for the US International Muzzle Loading Team, which Val Forgett was a major sponsor of.

It utilized the full-size grip frame, which was a new feature at the time. The barrel has a 1:30" gain-twist, cut-rifling, & .008" deep grooves. It is the only Pietta revolver I am aware of that has a dovetailed front sight, adjustable for windage correction. Its two identifiable features are the dovetailed front sight, and a silver-plated trigger guard.

The groove diameter is .456" and shoots the .457 RB like the Ruger OA. I shoot mine with 18 grains of Schuetzen FFFG, C.O.W., Hornady .457 RB, T/C Bore Butter on top and Remington #11 caps.

By a stroke of luck, I bought another one from a "retired" N-SSA shooter yesterday. The gun is still available from Dixie Gun Works, AKA Dixie Remington New Model Army "Shooters" Revolver, cat#RHO135, Page 80 in 2015 DGW catalog. Price is $ 925.00. Back then, they were $ 400.00.

Its still holding them in there at 25 yards with 15,000+ rounds fired.

D Buck,
That picture looks like one of my Uberti Millennium Remingtons with the matte black finish. I like the non glare finish for sunny days. I didn't know I got a premium finish when buying on of their lower priced models. I shoot them in Cowboy Action shoots (see pic). Note the cap flying clear of the gun. I tell people my guns have an "auto eject feature" for removing caps.

Hellgate, the Millennium finish on those revolvers was simply just a bead-blasting with aluminum oxide glass beads to produce a coarser finish and then hot-dipped in the bluing bath.

That method saves manufacturing costs on polishing before blueing, and allows manufacturing blemishes to be "camouflaged" by the bead-blast finish.

I competed at muzzleloading matches from MD to GA, and some club ranges didn't have a covered firing line, so I gave it to my gunsmith to bead-blast & blue.

That produces the matte blue finish to reduce glare on the revolver.

D.Buck

I was wondering about that dull finish. thanks for the explanation.
The factory finish on my 1990 Shooter's Model Pietta rivals the finish on my new Uberti 1858.

I have 2 Remmies a 8" and a 5 1/2", the long one has the accuracy for long shots but the 5 1/2" has it all over in handling and it's accuracy is plenty good enough for close quarters work!
The plain swadged lead ball shoots very well from either revolver and they load quickly and smoothly. A simple cylinder change is fastest but you have to reload eventually, so you'd better get used to doing it.
At the range I use a loading stand but without it, loading is as much of a hassle as the Colt design is.
Remington really put together an advanced design with the full top straa and reliable safety notches! Stillbest to load 5. My only complaint is the small cylinder arbor on the Remington, it does krud up sooner but I just wipe everything down every 3 cylinderfulls with a Windex soaked towel and re-lube it with Bore Butter.
I am guessing that in theheat of battle during the Civil War, the Remmies didslow down but it was easy to remidy.
Way ahead of the times inthe respect of design!

Want To Play

Please review my Remington and advise if I can join the club. He is the older brother to his 2 sisters. Tons of fun to shoot. Draws a crowd at the range.

I like your Colts better. I don't like the Rem grip, but that is just me.

I think the solid top Rem frame is stronger than the open top Colts but I think that is more nostalgia than anything.

They all shoot good albeit differently.

To each their own.
