Must be a good reason only NMAs and Rugers were used, and not sure what a " proper open top " would be. The only change a NMA needed was a higher front sight. Other than that, they were good to go. I know some of you guys love Colts. To each their own. I'll take the balance, pointabilty, and certainly the ergonomics of a NMA over a Colt any day. :p I just can't see me buying a gun that uses a wedge and screw to hold it together. :neener:

Well Mr. Paul,
I can understand that you're happy with comparing "non-correct" open top revolvers to a design that is used even today!! All makers of S.A. revolvers today use a frame that has a screw in barrel (it's all about economics), that's easy. To make a true copy of an open top (you know, the first "successful" multiple shot pistol) it should be a true copy!! None, until lately (Pietta has addressed the proper set-up but still has its own issues) are representative of Colts design down to the tee!!
That being the case, the open top with it's wedge (forget the screw, that is just to keep the wedge from being fully extracted. Helps to know what you're arguing against!!) is actually a stronger structure than your anemic, thin top strap, skinny frame (plunger cross section) revolver. I am even a fan of the Remington's myself (wouldn't have spent almost 2 years figuring out how to spring them with coils!!), but the fact is, the large arbor, robust frame and barrel lug is a much stronger design than the comparable, period, top strap S.A.! It's just much more labor intensive to do so (it's at least a 20 yr. older design!! But an excellent one!!!) In fact, I actually bent the frame of my Remington trying to load some "too big balls"!! Lol!!! You wont/can't do that with an open top Colt type S.A.!! In fact (again!) I've actually sheared a loading leaver pivot screw on a Walker (ASM) doing the same thing. So, I replaced the screw in the Walker, I didn't replace the Remie!!

So, as to my statement, a correctly appointed open top revolver of Colts design would and should be an equal if not better than the top strap Remington. . I can assure you that my own cartridge converted Dragoons (of Uberti build but highly " massaged "!) are extremely accurate and quite frankly the most accurate revolvers I've ever owned!! That has been verified by an ex 3 gun shooter/customer of mine which I've had the pleasure to shoot with!
So, the "good reason" the more economical Remies/Rugers are what you see more of is, quite simply, there's no "correctly" produced open tops to compare them/compete with!
Pretty simple once you understand the "why".

Mike

You're correct, this is a Remington club thread, and yes, I have a very nice Santa Barbara copy, but making a comment about a comparison between the 2 prominent makers of the era that we seem to care for, seems only fair to point out that you're not comparing "apples to apples" so to speak. As I stated in my earlier post, a more "proper" open top example may prove to raise an eyebrow or two . . . even amongst the competition crowd . . .

Definitely like that look of the 5" barreled NMA with the conversion cylinder! From the target results seems to be an accurate shooter too!

Dragoon, I should get out of the habit of bad mouthing Colts. I good friend at my club loves and shoots them and we love to, should I say, tease each other. I have just a little trouble believing any open top frame gun is stronger than a gun with a top strap. All the Colt SAA's have a top strap. All your modern guns have a top strap. I would suppose any revolver can be accurate. It's just that everyone on the national MLing pistol range shot the NMA and then when Ruger came out with their BP revolver a lot of guys went to them. It's just the way it is. Everyone can shoot whatever they like, and I'll try and be a bit more polite from now on. Paul

Very elegant looking NMA you have there! I like the engraving with the blued finish and how well it goes with the wood grips!

Both Remingtons look great though I think I prefer the blued model to the nickel plated one. Either way they're perfect for any backyard BBQ you might go to!
