Chain from motorcycles and cars/trucks have gone into 1095 or 1085 or ... powder to make "pattern welded steel" for many years. I have a Harley chain steel that Larry Harley made into a piece.

Powder? Flux, i.e. borax.

You let the blade cool on white oak ash, vermiculite, perlite, etc.
