I was in the neighborhood of a range that rents guns to day and had the chance to fire off a few boxes of 9mm through 3 guns. I shot a CZ75B, Ruger SR9 & S&W M&P 9c.

The CZ was a dream to shoot and deadly accurate. For me, 90% within a 4" circle is pretty good @ 7 yards... The trigger pull was the lightest of the three guns. My only misgiving was that the slide would close when I slammed in a mag.

The SR9 was disappointing. The grip was too thin for my tastes. I didn't like the trigger at all. and it shot low. Granted the adjustable sight can be... adjusted and my grouping wasn't bad, but I just didn't feel good vibes pulling the trigger.

The S&W was not quite as accurate as the CZ, but it was not bad and it was a pleasure to fire, even is the hinged trigger took some getting used to.

So, as I draw closer to my actual purchase of a gun, I am left to ponder the S&W vs. the CZ. If the slide issue is not a common problem, then it's an easy choice, but I am wondering if the full size M&P would be different enough for me to prefer it.

Anyone have any insights here?

Three good guns... sounds like you have your mind made up. You're the only one who can decide whether a gun fits your hand well and if you can shoot it well. Have fun!

GasX,

I also recently, within the last month, bought a new pistol. After going to numerous gun shops and one gun show I had narrowed it down to the S&W M&P 9 and the FN Herstal FNP 9. My decision was based upon how good they felt in my hand and the reviews I had heard or read. I love the grip on the S&W but after coming on here and having people recommend CZ I made another trip to a gun shop to handle one. As soon as I picked it up I realized that there was no longer a decision to be made. Well that's a lie, I had to decide which CZ I wanted. I finally settled on the CZ 75 SP-01 and I have never looked back. I can honestly tell you that I could not be happier with my purchase. Now, by no means am I saying that you the S&W is not a fine pistol, but the CZ just felt so natural to me. I am sure both serve you well, but if you really liked the CZ I say do it.

I can only speak for myself, but I have never had the slide release when loading a magazine. I have however enjoyed shooting her more and more every time I go to the range.

Best of luck,

Shawn

There is another post here with some interesting comments on comparing guns, but I think helping people make good decisions is the best reason to keep them going. My own opinion is, if you are - as you sound - relatively new to guns, is to try some more and keep reading on the forums. Don't forget to "allow yourself" to pick a gun you like the looks of, too! --YES!: "I think it looks cool" is a legitimate criteria - of course, not the only or even most important, but it counts!

It's true that the majority of major-brand offerings are overall pretty close in overall quality as far as reliability and accuracy. Handle as many as you can before you make your decision and consider how it feels and how well you shoot it as the most important criteria.

By the way, another tip: Most ranges have limited rentals available. Reach out to members in your area and offer to buy some ammo in trade for some range time with their guns. If you're ever near Philly, I've got a few for you try!

I hear you on range rental selection. Of the 3 indoor ranges near me, 2 rent guns. One has a selection of about 10 guns to choose from. The one I was at today had an impressive selection spanning 3 or 4 display cases. If I was willing to shell out for more ammo in more calibers, I would have been there all night. :)

For a number of reasons beyond the direct scope of this thread, if I were to buy tomorrow i'd be buying an East German Makarov. However, I softened to the idea of a 9mm Luger weapon today and the CZ leads the pack.

The full size M&P is a lot different than the compact... Don't decide before trying one out as well.
While I really like Cz's, they're da/sa, and mastering that da pull is not happening without lots pf practice (most just end up shooting sa 99% of the time), and an M&P with a trigger job is a thing of beauty and will actually have far less take up than the CZ...
