anyone want to critique this scenario?

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — A marriage-minded man ran naked through his neighborhood, trying to show his hesitant girlfriend that taking risks is important. He got more than he bargained for when he ended up being chased and shot at.
"Just when you thought you had heard everything," Ann Arbor police Detective Sgt. Jim Stephenson told The Ann Arbor News.
The couple were discussing marriage early Wednesday when the woman said she wasn't sure if she was ready, according to Ann Arbor police reports. The man responded that taking risks is an important part of life and, to prove his point, jumped out of a first-floor window and ran naked across the street.
Before he could return, he spotted a couple walking and hid in some bushes to avoid them. A 28-year-old man noticed the bushes rustling and bare feet underneath, then drew a .40-caliber handgun and ordered the naked man out, police said.
The naked suitor ran away, but the armed man gave chase and threatened to shoot, police said. The gunman fired a shot and the naked man fell to the ground, suffering minor injuries.
A resident called police, who arrested the gunman on charges of aggravated assault and carrying a concealed weapon. He was taken to the Washtenaw County jail but released following further investigation, police Sgt. Patrick Hughes told The Associated Press.
The naked man was not arrested and didn't want to pursue charges, Hughes said.

Bad decision

Shooting someone who is clearly unarmed (literally naked!) and running away is a no-no.

Ordering him out of the bushes at gunpoint may have been justified.

All in all this one makes the CCW crowd look bad.

ugg, looks like two idiots. One idiot to run around naked and another idiot to shoot at him. The shooter might have an argument that a naked man hiding in the bushes might be a danger of sexual assault but it sounds like the naked man was fleeing and therefore NOT a threat.

It would be nice if they would charge the naked man too. Indecent exposure or whatever they have in that state.

It is possible that we don't have the whole story:cool: but what exactly was the rational to shoot? Rustling bushes and a naked guy running away from you doesn't sound like a valid reason.

What's to critique? The armed citizen (who obviously felt he was performing a public service) was very wrong to involve himself like that. The proper response would have been to call the police.

I would guess that the shooter's plan was to hold the naked man for the police. But when the naked man wouldn't go along with his plan, he shot at him. Not the correct response at all. Probably got so focused on taking the naked man into custody that he forgot anything he may have learned about use of force.

I wonder if he had a CCW permit. The article says he was initially arrested for carrying a concealed weapon but was subsequently released. So I wonder if he had a permit.....

Carrying a gun like the police do, doesn't make you one. In most places there are only a couple possibilites when you encounter a naked person hiding in the bushes. It's either some kind of a prank (like this incident) or you're dealing with an alzheimers patient or a severely emotionally disturbed person.

If it's a prank or an alzheimers patient, a firearm isn't the proper response. If it's an EDP you shouldn't attempt to deal with the situation by yourself.

so the lesson learned are......

Don't assume that your permit to carry is the same as being deputized.

and...

Deadly force is only an appropriate response when your life, or the life of another is under immediate threat.

and...

Drawing your CCW and discharging "warning shots" to either scare away suspected BGs or to coerce them to obey your commands is a good way to get someone unnecessarily hurt or killed, or to get yourself locked up.

and...

running around naked in the street is not such a good way to propose marriage. ;)

We used to do "lessons learned" training weeklly in my navy days. The points made had more impact when you realized that someone (probably not all that different than yourself) was actually dumb enough to make such a mistake.

A prime example of why....

Yoopers call the down staters, trolls (they live below the bridge to you non-Michiganers). Yoopers don't have to do such crazy stuff to catch a woman........chris3

So did he successfully convince the gf that taking risks is important?
I can see pulling your gun (or at least having your hand on it) in this situation knowing nothing more than there is a naked man in the bushes next to you. But shooting an unarmed person who is running away is pretty hard to justify.
Luckily the guy wasn't killed or paralyzed.
I hope he didn't have a CCW permit but from the reports I've heard it sounds likely he does.
