A friend of mine came up to visit and brought his new girlfriend. We decided to go shooting. It's about an hour drive to the range, so on the way I drummed into her the 4 rules. She had them memorized by the time we got out there. She fired about 20 rounds from the .22, and then I decided to let her shoot my 12 guage remmy 870... though it was only with #8 target shot. Now this girl is 18, about 100 pounds, and she had a GREAT TIME with the shotgun. I almost got her to shoot my trustly 30-06, but it kicks so hard that it hurts me (and I'm a good 6'6" 300)... se we decided against it. Anyway, another non-shooter educated on the fun and safety of shooting. Yay.

the 30-06 is one of those rounds where you wonder HOW IN THE HELL DID WE WON A WAR with it!

Must have taken a tough breed of person to rapid fire a garand back in the day.

I'm reading all sorts of stories about newbies going to the range so much I declare August take a newbie shooting month!

Duke,

The 30-06 out of a Garand is *much* tamer than out of a bolt gun! The Garand is heavy, and the gas system takes some of the "ouch" out.

Years ago I fired 5 rounds of factory .308 out of my friend's Winchester "featherweight" bolt gun, off the bench. Five rounds was enough! When my CMP Garand came, I was apprehensive at first - but shooting it was painless, and it is a total hoot to shoot! Fifty rounds of surplus 30-06 ball at the Garand match does not leave me sore (although I do wear a shooting coat, which takes out a lot of the "ouch" too).

If you figure out a way to induce non-shooters to come to the range the first time, please post it. Most people I know either shoot, or don't want to hear about it.

Purrrs,
BobCat
