Trade a Shield for an XD-e?

I am a strong proponent of hammer guns, but the XD-E platform has it's geometry all wrong. No comparison to similar feature competitors like the P239/P225/39XX.

yeah. They just took their XDS and modified it to take a hammer. That’s why it looks so awkward. They added a hammer to a striker fired weapon.

I'd choose a DA/SA gun long before a striker fired gun. I'm not a fan of supposed safety device built in the triggers of striker fired guns.

That said, I have an XD-e and it is an ok gun. Works fine. Of the choices presented, I'd go with the XD-e.

But, I've moved on to an H&K P30SK-V3. I like it much better than the XD-e.

Thanks everyone for your input!
I'm definitely leaning away from the XDe now. Just recently gaining an interest in Ruger's P345. I have a P89 and I love it... in spite of being the overbuilt monstrosity that it is. P345 is much more sleek and was the last of the P-series with some upgrades.I'm kind of interested in going back to .45ACP for EDC. Even though the P345 has like 10oz over the Shield, people say it's very concealable and it looks like a very comfortable gun to hold. I sold my old Bersa 45 Ultra Compact earlier this year. I still have plenty of 45acp lying around (hint).

The irony is that a lot of people are making the same argument against the P30 and VP9 that many here made about the XDE. Too big for it's capacity compared to other guns on the market.
I have a Shield Plus and a P30SK that are darn near the same size albeit the SK is a little longer in the barrel. Both are identical in capacity. The SK weighs 3+ ounces more but that is minimal. I carry both IWB appendix and they conceal well. P30SK has been around for several years as has the Shield with the Plus model being the latest and greatest. I had a P365 that I found a little to small and snappy for my liking. I think they have reached a point with the Micro's getting to small for guys with bigger hands. I have a Kimber Micro 9 Rapide that I have outfitted with Hogue grips that is as small as I'm willing to carry for an EDC. For a small gun I carry my LCP...pretty much as a backup.

Actually the Shield Plus is thinner than the SK but fatter than the Shield 2.0 for a thinner grip. The SK is chunky compared to the Shield Plus while having the same capacity and grip length. The P30SK is almost 4 ounces heavier than the Shield Plus.

My point was that the P30SK and the VP9SK with the 10 round mag is the same size as the competition with a 13 round mag. The SK with a 13 round mag is the same size as a G19, M&P 2.0 Compact, XD Mod 2 Compact, CZ Compact, etc with 15 round round mags. The P30 with the standard 15 round mag is about the same size as a Glock 17.

Point taken. HK has always gone their own way and pretty much have a cult following. Their big claim to fame is the 24 different grip combinations they offer. As with any gun, I guess it boils down to the individual's personal preferences other than capacity. I want something that moulds to my hand. The P30SK is hands down the winner in that department followed closely by the Shield Plus. I prefer the paddle style mag release over a button as I release with my strong side index finger, though the longer button on the Shield worked for me once I moved it to the right side. Glocks just don't do it for me. CZs aren't all that comfortable in my hand either.

Those HK's in this category sure are nice!
I consider HK a little out of my price range, along with Sig...although that could change. I'm not THAT poor! :D Actually those two manufacturers offer platforms I REALLY like (compact hammer-fired).

Anyhoo, I mentioned Ruger's P345 in a previous post. After a few Googlings, I realized the P345 has a reverse safety, which is exactly why I don't carry a S&W 69xx series, which I otherwise really like. I just can't win. :( Maybe I SHOULD just save up and get a really decent hammered compact 45 from a good name. I wouldn't want to spend more than about $700 though.

On that note (cost) a PX4 is just starting to look better better. I don't think it looks quite as nice as the others we've mentioned here, but it's still not bad. There's got to be some sort of tradeoff I suppose.

HK's are a little crazy at the moment, but then again, what premium firearm isn't? If it meets all the criteria you're looking for then it should be given every consideration. I paid a pretty penny for my P30's and have no regrets. I have something that really works for me and fills me with joy every time I pick them up.

I have both the P30sk, P30L, and PX4 Compact. All are great in their own way. You cant loose with either choice. I paid $620 NIB for the P30SK and $625 used like new for the my P30L. This was all within the past two months. Think the cheapest I seen them lately was just under $600 new a couple of weeks ago. The PX4 should be in the same price range.

Those are actually pretty good prices. I paid more for my P30SK a year ago.

I only have gunship experience with the XD-E but I wasn't impressed. It seems big and heavy for the capacity and I wasn't thrilled with the trigger.

IF I wanted a small DA/SA my top three would be the, sadly discontinued, RAMI, PX4 subcompact and HK P2000SK
I recently made a thread comparing my new Hellcat to some of the older similar size/capacity pistols I have (Shield, G2C, Beretta 9000S, CZ RAMI). The RAMI competes very favorably except for weight.
https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/hellcat-vs-older-sub-compact-9mm-pistols.893204/

I've about run enough rounds through my Hellcat to have it replace my Shield for EDC -- more rounds, slightly smaller size, with marginally less fully loaded weight despite the higher round count.

If you shoot your Shield well, I'd keep it, and add that hideous abomination - XDe.
I think you will regret selling a gun you shoot well with.

I handled an XDe. Trigger was horrid, bore axis was high, and the gun seemed bulky. I understand the desire to carry a DA/SA gun, but for me, it definitely wouldn't be that one.

But I carry a Sig P938, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I used to be a DA/SA only guy. I carry a striker now due to size and weight but I’m really coming around to DAO hammer fired guns. Something to consider.
