Yes, sorry for the 1984 reference.

So I was watching Comcast CN8, which is a local news channel over here in NJ. They had a story about the Trenton Police installing 35 surveilance cameras in high crime areas. These cameras were located on streetlights and posts, corners of buildings and other areas. The police said it is in an effort to control crime. Now dont get me wrong, Im all for crime control and putting the bad guy away. And hell, I support the police, Im actually in the hiring process with a police department right now. But this is going too far.

I know this is a bad neighborhood, but I cannot seriously be comfortable with the police recording the front of my house, business or street 24/7. So where does it go from here. Say the crime drops 1%, the newspapers would read about how wonderful an idea these cameras are. Then they start appearing in all neighborhoods, low crime or not.

Now what does this mean for gun owners. Maybe you take your gun case out of your car and the camera catches you. Nothing illegal, but maybe they send some people to check if everything is in order. Maybe the camera sees you cleaning your gun through a window or something. I dont know, I can think of hundreds of possibilities, but its not just about whats possible, its about whats happening now.

I will try to find a link for you guys. Just thought you would be interested in whats going down in this crazy state of NJ.

This kind of technology is here to stay. The question is how are we going to live with it.

Perhaps transparency would be best. Make live feeds as well as archives available on the internet. This would make public what the government is observing and keep down abuse.

heres an idea.

Pulls some officers off revenue collec....I'm sorry I mean traffic duty and make them walk a beat like cops did for years and years to good effect.
