I recently did a trigger job on my Savage 17HMR, as the amount of force did not even register on my RCBS trigger pull gauge. Afterward there was no more slack just a crisp 3.5# let off that I can live with.

The only thing I did was take the action out of stock, removed the bolt, and noted three c-clips holding the safety, trigger, and sear in the receiver group on the left side. On the right is the safety spring that keeps the three pins with tension on them. (the safety spring just sits just under the head of the pins and gives some resistance for the safety.). What I was interested in was the sear and the trigger engagement, so I just removed the safety spring, and the two c-clips and removed the pins, that secured the trigger and the sear, and the two fell free from the receiver group. I noted the trigger spring to be at least 2 coils too much, so I removed one of the coils. Next I noted a wavy sear surface where the trigger and sear engaged, so I used a very fine flat file and proceeded to file the wavy surfaces smooth. Note before the trigger would involve at least two slacks and a heavy squeeze before firing, afterward the two slacks have been eliminated, and it is as described, a nice crisp 3.5# trigger pull.

The re-assembly is really simple however, I placed a small amount of gun grease in the recess where the trigger spring is inserted, in order to hold the spring in place, after inserting the sear with the pin, and checking the proper engagement with the trigger pin installed I carefully turned the action over and replaced the safety spring. I then re-installed the bolt and checked the trigger and to my delight it was a vast improvement. Then I checked the safety and purposely let the base of the stock drop on a carpeted floor and noted the safety stayed in intact. Note I did this last phase at least 3-4 times.

Hopefully I won't have any problems with this rifle on down the road. I doubt seriously that Savage did anything to harden the trigger and sear that I did the filings on, after all I only paid under $200.00
for it so I shouldn't be out that much in the case I did something that is terrible. I'll say this much the accuracy of the rifle sure has improved with this wee bit of work.
