I ordered this sight to mount on a carry gun. I ordered the Dual Illuminted version as not having to worry about batteries failing was to me a benefit. As good as Trijicon products generally are, I'd steer clear of this one. When you and your target are both in either a dark area or a well lit area the green triangle is dimmer than I thought it should be but visible. If you're in an area that's not as well lit and your target is in a well lit area the triangle is either barely visible or not visible at all. We can't pick the lighting conditions in a SD scenario, and not being able to see your sight is an obvious problem. It's been returned for a refund as it's unusable, which is disappointing. By way of comparison I also have a Sig P320RX and have always been able to see the red dot, regardless of lighting conditions.

Yes the Trij RMR is noticeably dimmer than the Romeo, but it's a lot easier to pick up than the supplied night sights. It's the tradeoff you make when not using batteries. I have 3 RMRs and one Romeo. 2 of the RMRs co-witness with the fixed sights so it's not really a problem. Still waiting for parts to mount my 3rd RMR. This one won't co-witness but I also have a built in laser so we'll see how it goes. If it doesn't work I'll check out the Romeo Zero.

I would really like it to work out but, realistically, the RMR is maybe 20 - 25 % as bright as the Romeo.

If it doesn't work out the RMR will get mounted on another HD weapon. Old eyes make quick friends with optical sights.

How do you think the dual illuminated RMR would fare in a typical hunting situation?

That is what I have been pondering for my 44 mag rifle

Yup. The Trijicon RMR is absolutely the go-to for RDS pistols, but only the battery powered ones. Always the one approved for service with police, even if another is also allowed.

The tritium/fiber is a good idea, but has the washout times too often. I wish Trijicon made a tri-powered RMR so you had backup aiming when no battery, or to boost power / reduce battery load etc. But, they don't.

I’d stick with the battery powered sights. The dual illuminated one is just too dim.

A few years ago, I started looking at RMRs and I asked one of the sales folks at a store if I could see on of the dual-illumination sights. The idea is fabulous, but just holding it up at arm's length in my hand and looking through it around the store, I could tell the same shortcomings the OP described. So down the road when it was time to buy one, I picked up the Trijicon red dot battery powered RMR and have been extremely happy with it using the auto setting.
