Went to range today my first this year. After my last thread unbelievably stupid, I joined a gym club it has a 300 yd range, the most distance in the area. IMG_20190217_174143.jpg

I took my glenfield m 60, Smith 5904, say 11 in 223 and rem 700 in 7mm 08. The temp today was 35 degrees with a sweet wind at 7 mph.
I had several goals to achieve first sight in m60, second finish load works for saving 11 verify zero on rem 700 and run some practice rounds through 9mm.

Well the 22 was easy zeroed easily at 50 yd in just a few shot and ran 50 through for fun and warm up. Chose to shoot 223 next. Started at 50 yds it was printing 6 inches high at 50. Wow. Fired a few and got it down to 4 in high. Then went to 100 yds fired 5 rounds and no hits on paper. Lowered it 5 inches and hot dead center 8 inches high-energy down 10 inches and again no holes in paper. Well I put it away cause I've got a problem that I won't be able to fix at range.
Two other range members came set up and one had portable steel plates on chains hung from shepard hooks and let us use one for pistol
Well I must say that I'm in need of practice. I hit the plate but only 9 times out of 30 rounds.

I invaded my 700 and fired at 100 yds group centered about 2 inch high group larger than normal but haven't had much trigger time so I'll take it. Next went to the 200 yd line
Again group larger than I like but acceptable at moa.
There was a steel plate at 300 and a paper target that I'd put up. I fired 2 rounds at steel plate and scored 2 hits and 8 rounds on paper had 1 flier my fault the other 6 were 4 inch low in a 4 inch group. Not great but it is a start. There was also a three quarter inch thick manhole cover at the 200 yard line that I hit 10 for 10. I ended on that positive note, the temp was starting to drop and I'd been there for almost 4 hours.

I'd welcome 35°, I've been sitting around waiting for it to get above 20° so I can try out some reloads!

200 yards is my max range at home. 400 yards is the max I know of at a range about 2 hours south me. Cool range, last time I was there they had a real classy bonfire going in the pines with coffee to warm up between shooting.

Since I do occasionally get shots at whitetail at up to 300 yards, I try to visit that range as much as possible. I know i can theoretically hit at 300 yards using my 200 yard range but you can't beat real world practice. Keep at it!

What’s that white stuff all over the ground that looks like a UPS popcorn convention?

Snow frozen rain over a layer of ice some spots were quite slick.
Hey 35 is a heat wave here this time of year it was 17 in the morning and 25 on Saturday. The load I was shooting in my rem work best between 60 and 80 have a long way to go to reach those temps.

It’s 83 here today. I’ll probably go to the range for a few pics. I forgot to do the monthly challenge the last time I went.

Were you shooting off of a bench or off-hand, stillquietvoice? I don't get how shooting at a 300yd range is "unbelievably stupid". Any day at any range is a good day for me. :D

I encourage you to continue and urge all of you to practice in extremes for several reasons, most notably because you learn how your equipment works in the extreme. And, more importantly, the better you can function in such temps the easier it is to do things in warmer temps. Trust me on this. And obviously, the older you get the harder this will become but it’s excellent to train all year round. Many people don’t even go out and shoot unless it’s ancertain temp. Big no no imo. Besides, you usually have the range all to yourself. Haha.

The range trip wasn't that is the title ofy last thread from Dec 30 also the last time I went out. Had grandson withe his second time shooting. The crib note version is we left state land because some Jack wagon walked in front of us while we were firing.
Got a range membership soon after to try and avoid stupid.

Was shooting from a bench using Caldwell front and rear bags . I'm out of practice haven't had many outings in the past year. When I get proper trigger time and temps in the 60 to 80 degree tamge I shoot sub moa. Using imr 4350 at Max charge usually works well but a .1 to. 2 gr overax works best below 40. I never would run those loads in warm weather because I get pressure signs.

I agree but work schedule does not allow it work 6 days a weeky best opportunities to shoot are my one day off and when it stays daylight longer. Three years ago I went out at least twice per week from the beginning of March till a week beforehumting season in Nov. If I shot groups larger than an inch at 200 I had a bad day.

But that kind of precision takes lots of trigger time.

I had just put a different optic on the m 60 and have been having a few failures to feed. I polished the feed ramp and that helped some will probably have to replace some springs to fix it completely.

I almost had to cover the tomatoes I planted in January... I had a low of 34 last night.

In all seriousness, good for you getting out and shooting when it’s hunting weather! You might see ammo performance differences when temps drop, you teeth certainly may chatter more than when it’s 80, your clothes will match your hunting togs, etc. Just like shooting from field positions, shooting in variable weather challenges you and can make you a more rounded, if not a better, shooter.

It sounds like your AR has some sort of issue, other than that you did very well.

Stay safe!

Yes but its a bolt gun got home and found that the front sight ring loosened up again. It was loose when I bought it several months ago. I think it's time to get new bases and rings.

Gotcha. I guess it's hard for some of us Southerners to understand how really cold it is up your way, and the effect the cold may have on your loads!

I'm trying to envision a "gym" club that has a 300 yard shooting range.

The weatherguesser is telling us 50 on Saturday and 55 on Sunday. That's mph, not degrees. Good shooting days are going to be few and far between until May around here.

I'll swap you the snow for our mud. It just won't stop raining since October. We've been lucky so far. It'll rain for a week straight and stop just before the rivers and creeks start to flood. They get back down to normal and another wave of rain comes in. This time we have some minor flooding but nothing major. The last 3-4 range trips have been on a wet, muddy range in between showers.

That would be the best gym club ever.
Workout, shoot a magazine, and go about your day.

Might like that. The snow hasn't been that bad so far only had to use blower twice.

Put new rings on my 223 yesterday need to get back out. It's rainy today and have a high wind advisory that is supposed to start layer this afternoon and continue till tomorrow evening. They are expecting 65 mph gusts.
