I keep 2 guns in the truck, one is a marlin 22 and the other is a winchester94 made in 1977. I just pulled them out to oil them and the winchester showed quite a bit of rust on the bottom of the receiver and on the lever. I use hopps oil, the marlin was oiled? 6 months ago and i've only owned this 94 for a couple months. Both are kept in leather saddle scabbords. Any tips to keep the rust off???? These particular guns I don't mind getting beat up but rust just ain't right!! I just re oiled them with lucas gun oil (never used it before) any other methods to keep it from rusting? Other than oiling it more often.

It is not recommended to store firearms in leather.

I've been trying out the Johnson's Paste Wax lately, and from the way it covers the outside surfaces, it looks promising. Others have reported good results using wax to ward off corrosion issues.

For mine what's always worked is to put a thin layer of grease over the exterior metal.
It worked in Florida and it works here in Wyoming.

For the times when I've had them in a scabbard or outside a sealed case over a long period of time, depending on the gun, I've also put either one of those little finger rubbers from Walgreens or an unlubricated condom over over the muzzle to keep crud from going down the bore. I don't really do that now since I keep the trunk gun in a sealed soft case.

Clean-um up every now and again. Plus, if you can find some "RIG" give them a rub down. Keeping them in leather for extended amount of time with out some maint(cleaning) doesn`t help. J s/n.
