OK wheelie freaks - here is my aquisition from last Saturday at the Tulsa Gun Show - came in to my dealer this afternoon.

Though I would have liked to find a good 'dash 2' to have a P&R, this is still very pleasing - very tight, good overall finish and I'd say a 98% specimen. Probably not had huge thruput of ammo.

I have a 4" 629 but while nice, it is a dash 6 and has the darned spider hole, plus, always wanted this earlier .44 N frame to complement my 27's. This is a beautiful revolver, well to me anyways! While I love the 5" in the 27, the 6" with the 29 also seems about the ideal ''balance'' - looks right.

Lovely tho Smith old style blue is - when it comes to taking pics, boy does it ever show lint and, also hard to get an even tone whether oiled or free of oil. Small price to pay for such a finish tho. :)

Seems to date to late 1984.

Yes I like the 29 my self. Mine is 1983 and I have a older 629 mtn on lay a way. No spider hole and fireing pin where it belongs on hammer.

I found a 4" 29-2 at Tulsa, that blue finish is outstanding! I cleaned it, the fingerprints drove me nuts! Put a coat of Renaissance Wax on it and it looks much better.

Now if I could learn to take pictures like yours.

That is the best I could do. It doesn't do it justice.

Wow Mike - NICE find. Lucky I didn't see it before you did as I did have a yen to find a dash 2. And the 4" also - very sweet. I am tho well pleased with what I did get.

Yes a wax on the externals does help with finger prints - I usually just wipe over with a CLP impregnated cloth.

I am wondering how much you had to pay - probably quite high I'd imagine. Good job.

Mmmm so purdy.

I think I'm starting to catch the bug. I'm gonna have to step up my hunt before too long.

I save and save then I run into something like a 1911 and I spend and spend:uhoh:

Luckily at this stage in life I'm happy with a nice shooter so I can save a penny or 2.

Finally!

:D

Mike, did you come back to get that gun later? Because I was "scouting" and there was a gun in wood box just like yours marked "sold". I thought I had found one for Chris- then saw the 'sold' on the business card. NICE GUN!!

Chris that is the one I broke off from everyone (I do that, just see/ smell a firearm and off I go) and came back excited about the find, happy to know a Nice gun found a home - kinda sad we did not find one for you.

Chris's gun is Nice! I had a great time watching Chris do the Revolver Checkout. Enjoyed hearing Chris talk Guns period. Hearing him speak and share about the S&W wheelies was a special treat...

Steve

I left that one sit for 2 1/2 hours while I looked around, but it was not marked sold. I was lucky it was still there. I saw so many guns, it is hard to remember what else was there, but I seem to remember seeing one other 29-2, 4" blued gun with a case, but it might have been a 6 incher.

They are getting expensive, I paid $750 for it. I had been looking online for several weeks before the show, and the best I found online was $800 shipped, and I was too late for that one.

Mike

Ahh Mike - not surprised at all at the price tag. I hardly dared ask!!!

Mine was marked at $695 but the guy dropped to $650 - so with shipping and NIC's it finished up near $700 - wow.

Thank heaven a few weeks back I sold a trailer I no longer needed and so that was the necessary funding, otherwise I might have had to let it pass. That and having been lucky to save a fortune on flying because Larry's son in law got me standby tickets.

Larry's bro Gary bought an 8 3/8 dash 2 but it was on the loose side - well OK but used too - that had a 2x Burris on it and he got it for IIRC $450 - quite a snap but not so much a collectible.

Enjoy.

So Chris, you never did say, what is the secret to the great pictures? Is it lighting? I'm sure it is complicated, but if you could pass on a tip or two without writing a small book, I would much appreciate it.

Mike

Mike - my ''set-up'' is ludicrously simple and basic - even what some folks might call a ''lash-up''!! :D

It is the fleece draped over all sorts of detritis along from my computer - in fact below is a pic of just how absurd it is!!! One major factor is diffusion - which is why some white sheet is draped - above which three light sources - sometimes use all three some times two - plus a white card in front for fill in sometimes helps.

Tripod essential with electronic cable release (tho timed shutter will do if no option for that) plus having manual settings option. White balance needs set to suit lighting, and I shoot mostly around 1 -2 seconds at f11 to get some depth of field. It is not perfect and if I set up a better deal the lights would be better positioned. Oh and focus is manual also. Camera is Minolta DiIMAGE A1

After shooting, then always some work on image to deal with inevitable lint.

Preface : I couldn't take a picture if I grabbed one off a wall..

Chris my friend-

When you get thru discussing Eclectic-ism from the Reprobate Era - which I am a big fan of myself ...

Would you be so kind to shoot the darn 29-3 and give a range report please? :D

Note to self : Call Bonnie and tell her I found the white fleece from off the manikin in the guest room she was wondering about disappearing...;)

Hi Bonnie!

<hug>

She likes the way I type and talk southern...

Haha - ''white fleece'' - yeah right! LOL! Bonnie - I'll give her a hug alright - no prob's there ;)

I hope to shoot the 29 soon, tho it'll be with Magtech initially. I need to load up some of my fave Keith 250's when I get to it. I doubt I will be disappointed tho - all I may have to do is tweak sights, and other than that I all but know it will be ''grinnus maximus''.

I still have some great bullets to load for 45-70 that Gewehr sent me - shucks, so much reloading to do.

When I get to it I'll try and report tho - just for you, you Southern reprobate :D

Thanks Chris,

Not only lighting, but diffused lighting... I knew it had to be something with the lighting, plus some other stuff. Sounds like an undertaking when I have a lot of patience. And I'm a couple of lights short also.

I have a Minolta A200, so at least the camera part is covered. Now I have to dig into that manual thing that came with the camera and figure out how to get it out of Automatic!

Thanks for the tips.

Mike
