Don't have an AR, bought a 556 instead and have been very satisfied with it. Been thinking about buying a few more black rifles and am having trouble deciding how to proceed. The Del-Ton rifles seem to get reasonably good reviews and are available <$700 which seems like a heck of a bargain. Would kind of like to get another 556 (Commando model) but could get a couple of the Del-Ton rifles for that price.

I would probably buy an AR that is a step up from a DPMS if it were my money. Then again depending on your intended use there may be no real need to do that. If you went with one nicer AR the difference could go towards accessories such as mags or maybe an AK.

Depending on what else you own I would also consider an XCR given the price range you are talking about.

Intended use is really just to add a little variety to the gun safe and hedge against future price increases. Shot a buddies AR a couple weeks ago and reminded me of how annoying I find that sproinging that ARs do. In theory I would like a nice Armalite but would probably just be annoyed by a more expensive rifle making that noise, an el-cheapo Del-ton would be much more forgivable in that regard. Would really prefer to get another SIG556 as I absolutely love the one I have but it seems like I could get a lot of other stuff for the $. The XCR never really appealed to me... am I missing out?

my first AR was a del-ton. I'd put it up against just about any sub-$1000 AR if you get some of the extras that make it a bit more resilient.

I'd say that unless you have some experience with ARs, get a del-ton so that you have a cheaper AR to kick around while you learn about them, then take the next step up when you know EXACTLY what you want out of the platform, assuming you want something else.

I'd say get a del-ton and then put the rest of the money away for something else.

Ill take a stock RRA rifle in a similar configuration to that del-ton and I would expect it to run a bit better. I know in my case my del-ton won't hang with the RRAs. It just isn't as accurate. It is as reliable as any other non piston upper but my best handloads can't shoot what a lot of guys are getting out of multiple factory loads with their RRAs.

I say get 1 del-ton, and spend the other $700 on quad rails, forward grip, Bushnell Trophy MP red dot sight and ammo.

Building a del-ton. Going to be exactly what I want for $665 for the parts kit, add a lower (which I have) sub $800 gun with quad rails, magpul ctr stock, some little extras. For cheaper than an off the rack standard ar-15.

Got another lower, that I might finish sometime, but 1 ar, one ak, dozen p-mags, dozen ak mags. good to go.

Christmas time I will have at least one of each, and plenty of ammo holders. Then I will load up on ammo/brass reloading supplies.

Wait for the Bushmaster ACR.

The problem is nobody knows when this thing will be released or even if it really will. One might indefinitely. They may also wait long enough that purchasing EBRs becomes much more expensive or difficult. I'll be interested in the ACR if and when it is released.

I know in my case my del-ton won't hang with the RRAs.

not trying to argue to the contrary here, but...how well does your Del-Ton (or the one you shoot/shot) shoot compared to your RRA?

I can shoot out the bullseye at 30 yards with my chrome-lined Del-Ton; two whole boxes and made one big hole that took out most of the bullseye without any stray flyers (benched or nicely supported, though). I've had 3-4 shot groups at that range that can be covered by a dime (not common, though). Of course, thats only 30 yards, but...yea. How much better can your RRA perform? (only ask because I plan on buying a Stag, Bushie, or RRA if I can find one)

My RRA in AR-10 has grouped several shots one hole with barely any widening of the hole I think its great but then again I have only had the RRA, DPMS, and Olympic. Out of those I would take the RRA everytime I even sold the other two however my next AR will be an M&P.
