Two Would-Be Robbers Fatally Shot In Separate Incidents

FEBRUARY 11TH, 2003

A retired federal marshal in Queens shot and killed a would-be burglar who broke into his basement with another man Monday morning, and later in the day another robber was shot in a struggle in the Bronx, police said.

Amalio Santos, 47, told police he chased the two men outside after he confronted them with his handgun in his Briarwood home. Santos said he opened fire when one of the men turned around and pointed a revolver at him.

However, police did not find a weapon on the man, who was shot in the face and killed. The other burglar fled the scene in a champagne-colored Acura, police said.

Santos was not charged with anything.

Meanwhile, three armed men tried to rob a cigarette and soda distributor Monday evening in the Hub section of the Bronx. One of the suspects, 41-year-old Julio Villegas, was fatally shot in the chest and the head during a struggle with employees, police said.

The other two men fled the scene. One of the employees was hit over the head with a gun and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Two handguns were found at the scene.
