So what is your thoughts on the Uberti 1873 Cattleman series of SAA revolvers?

I've handled one & it looked to be of pretty good quality.

Yet, they're inexpensive! Especially when compared to Colts.
But they're even less expensive than a Ruger Vaquero (by about $100).
Not that Ruger is bad, I have a Blackhawk that I like very much.

I have a pair of them and they work fine, however the barrels were for .44 mag and the guns are .44-40 (.002" difference in bore) so I was running small bullets down the barrels and leaded them badly.

The forcing cones were also oversized which may have contributed to the leading problem as well. It wasn't a deal breaker but it bugged me so I put new barrels on this past fall.

I have had zero functional problems but I did do a general deburring on the guns while I had the barrels off.

I am not a serious SASS shooter but do go to the competitions on occasion, if I were interested in serious competition I'd likely go with Rugers.

I have owned several of them over the years.
They ain't no Colt and never will be, but they are a decent value for the money spent.

Sneering at Italian made SAs seems to be quite fashionable at many Colt forums. Frankly, although a longtime Colt and S&W collector, mostly the older DAs, I find the Italian made SAs very serviceable and a far better value than the current Colts. I know that my Cowboy Shooting buddies swear by them as well. Go for it. Dave

Cool! Thanks for all the replies.

I think my first one is going to be an 1873 Cattleman Brass NM
I really like the case color frame with the brass trigger guard & back strap

By the way, it's a 45 Colt & has a 5 1/2" barrel

I have one in .38/.357. It's a blast to shoot. I even conceal carry it sometimes in a Mernickle holster. I would like to buy another one when I have the bucks.

I've got a new Beretta Stampede that I think represents a great value for the money. Fit and finish are first rate, and I especially like the blue with case color frame finish.

bannockburn & Hondo,

What do your respective revolvers go for? I'm interested in possibly getting a .45 LC in the near future, just wondering. Thanks gentlemen.

I have a 5.5" barrel .357 version I bought about 6 months ago. The fit and inish are very nice, and the gun is a real workhorse. The action was a bit rough, but using instructions found on the "Hobby Gunsmith", I was able to smooth it out and it's "like buttah"...

Here is my Cattleman:

Here is one of the better quality Army San Marco (aka EMF New Dakota) in .45LC and 4-5/8" barrel. The finish is nearly as good as the Uberti, the color case hardening is even richer. It too needed a bit of tuning to get it smooth.

Something to consider: Both the .45 and the .357 are the same physical size. But the .357 weighs quite a bit more because there is a lot less metal removed when they bore it out for the smaller caliber. The recoil of the .45 is no appreciatively harder than the .38, at least to me. The cost of shooting the .45 though is about 4 times the cost of shooting .38spl.

Hondo 60,
I have the same gun you show in the picture but I have never fired the gun. I traded for the gun and its new and in the box has never been fired.Do you shoot cowboy loads only in your 45? Have any of you shot full house loads in these guns?

788Ham:

The one I want (an 1873 Cattleman Brass NM) will end up being $417.73 with tax

That was cheapest I found it at nelsontactical.com
(I live about 40 miles away so there's no shipping charge or FFL transfer, but I do have to pay sales tax (5.5%))

I don't have it yet - the whole point to this thread was to hear what others thought of Uberti quality. But what I'm hearing so far sounds good, so I'm figuring Feb 1st I'm gonna order the one in the picture I posted.

The 45 Colt that I have is a Ruger Blackhawk & those can handle the absolute hottest loads.

.45 colt is expensive, but you can get .45 acp cylinders for the Uberti guns for around $100. POI will be similar to .45 Colt and the price to shoot them will be almost the same as the .38s.

OK - so I couldn't wait til Feb 1st.
I went to the LGS today & bought it.

In WI there's a 48 waiting period, so I can pick it up Fri afternoon.

Guess what I'm doing Saturday? :D

PS: It costs me about $8.70 to load a box of 45 Colt (just another reason I like reloading my own)

x2 There is no way I could pay the price that new 45colt rounds are going for.

I bought 4 of the 1873 Uberti cattleman pistols a while back. Two in 45 colt and two in 357mag. One of the gun shops close to here got in over 350 of these two calibers and was selling them for $199....couldn't pass it up. So far I have really liked these guns. I have put hundreds of rounds out of the 45 colt downrange so far without a hitch.

Enjoy.

I own a real Colt SAA, as well as a Beretta Stampede and a Uberti Cattlman.

The real Colt SAA has the worst trigger of the three of them, and is by far the least accurate. I do not feel it is any better fit or finished than the Italian guns either.

For the value, the Colt SAA is the clear loser.

Yeah I know... I just can't see myself doing this in the living room without the wife screaming at me.

But just in case, I've saved up all the brass, so if I ever decide to reload, I'll be busy...:)

Hondo,

Thanks for hollerin' back. I've looked on line at them, I think the Uberti like you picked up is one I'll definitely look at also. I've got a Python, a S&W 629, but have never had a .45. Living out west here, just thought having one hangin' on your belt would fill the bill. Keep us informed as to how that thumb buster works!

Got a Cimarron Uberti. Suppose to be the Lexus of Uberti. Pretty accurate. Cylinder beginning to loosen after 1500 rounds of 45 Colt, but not too bad. Still shoots good, but I wonder if the metallurgy is as good as Colt's.

I have four total...All are great shooters, and I have fired approximately 2000 rounds through each in the last year. No breakages, minimal wear.

I like them, and I got them in sets, for approximately $600.00 per set.

They are all .45 LC and they all have the 5.5 inch barrel.
