Ultramax reloaded ammo

Hello all,

I shoot a H&K USP 9mm and I'm getting into action pistol shooting. I plan to shoot lots of ammo and was looking for a bulk purchase of 1000 or more rounds at a time.

My question is this: Sportsmansguide sells "Ultramax" reloaded ammo in lots of 1000 for just over $100. Is it any good? I went to the ultramax web site to check it out. They have a pretty good argument that their quality control is good. I'm specifically looking a the 115gr FMJ ammo.

I'm hoping for your opinions on that ammo or any other RELIABLE ammo that I can get cheaply.

I was feeding my USP .40 Ultramax and had great success with it...never had a problem til I switched to Winchester white box and had a series of failure to feeds...but no problems with the Ultramax in 500+ rounds.

I had bad luck with Ultramax and will never buy it again.

You can find 9mm CCI Blazer for about $100 per 1000, and sometimes S&B -- both are worlds better than Ultramax and they are factory fresh, not reloads.

Check the ammo specials at www.natchezss.com and www.ammoman.com and you can find some deals.

I don't recall ever using Ultramax 9mm but I've used a ton of it in 45ACP in several different 1911s and have never had a problem with it.

I still prefer S&B.

I think I recall some talk on the 1911forum about Sportsman's Guide listing 1,000 rounds/ $100 but supposedly it being a misprint and it was only meant to be 500 rounds/$100. And I think they've tried this several times from what I hear. I'd double check and then triple check again. And get the CSRs name and extension.

Have used Ultramax 45 Colt cowboy loads, they were fine and looked like new brass.

Sportsman's Guide usually doesn't have very good prices in my experience, I will only order from them if they are the sole source for an item.

The reason that I'm looking to buy from Sportsmansguide is that I live near their Minnesota retail store. I can pick up the ammo at the store and save the shipping cost. The drawback to that is that I also have to pay sales tax here.

I appreciate your advice. I'll take a look at CCI and S&B too.

I like it very much.

My agency used to provide Ultramax for training and qualifications and it was quite satisfactory. We eventually switched over to another brand.

In the meantime, I became especially impressed with the .223 ammo, the 55 gr SP--Extremely accurate for an out-of-the box, remanufactured ammo. I began buying it for my normal practice ammo, and use it for everything except my most critical accuracy use. I CAN load more accurate ammo for my CAR 15, but I work very hard a it, and all I (usually) care about is meeting minute-of-soft drink can at 200 yards. I save the labor intensive stuff for my bolt gun.

I recently used some ultramax for the first time in a rifle caliber. Loved it. Plan to buy lots more.

Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with their pistol ammo. I'd give it a try.


On another note, I also have had problems with SG and the 500 vs. 1000 rounds thing. I saw some 45 on sale, called, and the rep told me that it was a mis-print. She wouldn't give it to me at the stated price, so I sent them an e-mail. They sent me a $10 gift certificate.

I am also impressed with how well ultrsmax 55gr shoots in my .223. I have shot alot of it with no problems.

Ultramax has treated me well.. though in handgun ammo I've mostly bought cowboy loads and .380's. Nothing wrong with it in my book.

Natchez (natchezss.com) is currently selling the 115 gr. 9mm FMJ for 4.89 a box if you buy 10 or more; cheaper than Walmart Winchester, so I'm giving it a try.

Never mind but reference about misprinting the price, I forgot you were looking at 9mm. I'm sure that's the right price.
