I e-mailed Remington inquiring if their UMC 223 bullet was of the same construction as the M193. They advised it was not. I thought this info would be of interest. Byron

The UMC is remingtons "factory seconds" ammo sold en masse to box stores, same as the WWB. It's why they sell it so cheap. Problem is nobody knows what the heck "seconds" means. I put in my gun and it went Bang! No I usually just us Georgia Arms ammo so I don't have to worry about this stuff.

The Federal stuff is supposed to be Mil-Spec or at least the packaging leads you to that belief. The cases look like crap, but it shoots OK.

Even with my employee discount, UMC is more expensive than South African or wolf.
Don't get me started on Wolf though, I have a barrel that looks like a sewer pipe thanks to Wolf!

I didn't notice any extra crud in my barrel after shooting Wolf in my AR. The problem I did run into was that the loads were really inconsistant ... one round I get a typical AR carbine fireball, next round I'd get an ENORMOUS fireball, and the round after it would short stroke the bolt with no fireball.

I got the attached from Remington today that I thought would be of interest. Byron

Dear Mr. Adams,

Thank you for your patience. In most cases the bullet will pass through the
intended target with out fragmenting, However the bullet at 100yrds is traveling
at a high enough speed to crate a huge hole in the game.

My Mini 14 shots this round very good. There is a cayote problem on the farm. Up
to distances of 100 yards, will the 55 grain FMJ fragment or just make a 22
caliber hole at that distance. I wish to use the UMC as it is accurate.

I've used UMC extensively in 10MM auto, .40, and 9MM, as well as .303 Brit and .223. I've been very pleased with the results.

Perhaps they are seconds, but I haven't noticed any difference in the number of times the cases can be reloaded as compared to standard bulk Remington brass.

For my money, it's about as good as you can get in bargain ammo.

I've also used a ton of Wolf with no problems whatsoever.

mil spec ammo

I have a Remington 700 BDL .223. There was a sale of 55 grain Federal XM193 metal case boat-tail ammo that I thought I might try.

I bought a couple of boxes and fired all without a problem.

However, I thought it prudent to check with Remington as I had subsequently read some posts saying that this was mil spec ammo and should not be used in the 700.

I phoned Remington and was told not to use this mil spec ammo. Next, I phoned Federal and was told that the XM193 was indeed different then their American Eagle AE223 55 grain FMJ B-T ammo.

I would rather be safe then sorry so I will now buy only non mil spec ammo.

I just shot 100rds of umc .223 in my ar this weekend was pleased with
the accuracy and fairly clean no problems other than one case was smashed almost flat as I got ready to load in the mag. The box looked
fine the plastic carrier looked fine so I would say there is something to
the seconds thing.
