I have the opportunity to buy an unfired LNIB Ruger P89 in stainless.

The guy said he bought them when Clinton was still President before the AWB so they have 15 round mags. He says he has the original box and everything.

The P89's first year of production was 1993. I know that P89s are essentially P85s with a safety/decocker.

My question is are there any concerns with buying a first year P89? The P89 ran from 1993 to 2009.

The guy wants $400 for it. I think he is a touch high on price.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

The Ruger P-series has a reputation of a solid, well made pistol. My former Department issued them including the P-95.

However the DA/SA design is very dated. I have a P-89 which while it is reliable enough for self-defense I don't care for the trigger pull at all. There are more modern improved designs out there.

Frankly for what they are $400.00 is on the high side. There are a number of better designs that can be purchased for less. I like the Ruger SR9c which can be had for less than $400.00.

With that said the gun market is way out of tilt and another panic could well be just around the corner.

I have the P95 which has been rock solid reliable - to be honest though I enjoy shooting my wife's 9E more and find I'm more accurate with it. $400 is too much.

Do you want a hammer DA/SA, or a striker gun?

If for some reason you must have that model, go for it. You may not get another chance to get another unfired one again.

I had a Ruger P89 way back when they were still in production. It was a solid reliable gun. I traded it in on a Beretta 92... I have never missed the P89. Although reliable the P89 was just never that much fun to shoot. I still have the Beretta though and still enjoy shooting the Beretta.

I obviously don't NEED the P89, it is more of a want. I have two P90s and two P95s. It looks as though the P89 and P90 are very similar from an ergonomics and size point. I really like shooting my P90s.

I will have to see the gun and then make him an offer I feel comfortable with.

You can almost get a new Ruger American Pistol for what he is asking. I would offer 325 tops.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

In the Gun Broker universe that would be a good price. A LNIB P89 recently sold there for $490 - $525 if you include shipping.

I recently purchased a like new P89DC stainless on Gun Broker for $300. It only came with one magazine and didn't have the original box, and I considered that to be a fair price. Locally I would try to pay $350 for what you are being offered if it had one mag, and $375 if it had two. I just couldn't find any nice ones locally when I was looking.

If it's worth $500 to you, $400 is a good price. Unfired hold a premium to some. Two years from now, would you regret NOT buying it?

These were/are solid pistols, but the price is a little steep, and being an out-of-production gun, parts and company support is a concern. I'd pass at that price.

Before they were discontinued

A stainless P95 went for $399 and blued was $349----around here that was the price.

If its truly unfired---I would say that is a fair price-----just depends on how bad you want it.

I have 3 P95's------2 are still unfired.

If you were looking at it from a collector's point of view- unfired, new in box, then $400 now might be a lot better than who-knows-how-much-$$$ later. If it was something to just pop off a few rounds at the range, perhaps not.

As much as I like (respect is a better word), the P89 in a Ruger "classic" sense, I doubt that it will ever attain a significant collector's value.

Before my Stainless 1994 p89 would go anywhere, my Sig and CZ would have to take a hike. It was my first new semiauto pistol and it will always have a place in my safe.

Is it worth 400? It's not cheap plastic junk but it's not a sig either....Now if it were a P90 400 would be a steal. But then again 400 for a new p89 maybe worth it with your mini collection of Rugers.

As for parts....you won't have to worry about needing any until somewhere in the 20k round mark.

I'm not if it will either, but things happen. Back in 1984-85, I was a kid who liked to read comic books and there was a comic book shop in town that I'd go to every now and then. One weekend, they had some guys who made this very small time comic book there- I never heard of the comic, but I picked a couple up which the artists and writers signed for me. Even got a free little promo poster they signed. Those comics got thrown all over the house and junked and eventually tossed. It was the first three issues of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles :)

If you like and enjoy P series pistols... go for it! Differrent guns fit different people differently. If the P series fits you well and works well for you $400 for NIB Stainless sounds like a great deal! For me I am not a big P series fan so it wouldn't be worth that much.

I agree with MikeInOr,

You baited us with your question. :D Anyone with 4 P-series pistols knows already the strengths and weaknesses of the design and how well they like them. :)

I believe in the 3 is 2, 2 is 1 and 1 is none theory. :scrutiny: I'm not sure how many five is.

Never a big fan of the Ruger P series; much prefer their SR9c. At any rate $400 seems too high even for a LNIB P89. I would offer between $300 to $350 and let it go at that.

It's strange...when Ruger was still making the P-95 towards the end of production, they were selling around 300 or less, new. Now..just a few years later...people try to get 400 for them on gunbroker as used guns. Same thing happened with S&W Sigmas.

The "it's no longer made" mentality tries to jack the price up. A LNIB P 89 should be worth 400, I would think, but tell the guy you're also thinking about a brand new SR9c for 25 bucks less...maybe he'll go down on the price. :) Best of luck.

Not a fan of the P series.
Had one, the safety would disengage if you shook it, and you could fire the gun with the safety on. Scary.
I'd pass, $400 is reasonable for a NiB, but I'm just not a fan of the P series so that's too much for me to spend on one.

Not a Ruger "P" fan, I'd put that $400 towards a decent BHP, Sig P228, or a Beretta 92FS.
