I have come across an unusual Mauser Chileno Model 1895. Rifle appears to be unfired. All serial numbers match down to thel cleaning rod. The unusual part is that it is chambered for 6.5 x 55.

Is this thing for real? How much would be a reasonable amount to offer for the rifle?

I have one of those too. Caliber 7 X 57. Good shooter. Yours probably has value. Mine is missing some site parts and a band. Worth about 100 bucks or so. I was told they are not that uncommon. IF you look on some Mauser sites or forums you can probably get a better idea. Good Luck to ya!

I can't imagine a Chilean Mauser chambered for 6.5x55; at a minimum, a new barrel would be required.

I would certainly double check on the caliber. Some rifles chambered for the 7x57 will chamber the 6.5x55, though it usually requires a bit of force on the bolt turndown. Accuracy, needless to say, would be non-existent with that combination.

From what I've been able to put together, the small ring Mauser contracts ran as follows:

  • '89 Belgian - 7.65x53
  • '90 Turk - 7.65x53
  • '91 Argentine, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru - 7.65x53
  • '92 Spanish - 7x57
  • '92/'93 Spanish Navy (sample run) - 7.65x53
  • '93 Spanish - 7x57 (Berlin and Oveido/Cataluna)
  • '93 Turkish - 7.65x53
  • '94 Brazil, OVS - 7x57
  • '94 Swede (sample run) - 6.5x55
  • '95 Chile, Mexico, Uraguay, Peru, Persia, OVS, Bolivia, Costa Rica, El Salvador - 7x57
  • '96 Swede - 6.5x55 (Berlin and Gustaf)

If you're looking at a 6.5x55 barrel on a Chilean receiver (the receiver should clearly be marked as a Model 95, Loewe on the left side and the receiver ring should have the Chilean crest on it), then most likely somebody took a Swede barrel, stamped it to match the S/N of the receiver, and bolted it together. That would be my guess, unless it really is a 7x57.
