Hi folks,

I just handled a rifle, but amnt an expert on used rifle values.

It's an older Remington 700 .270 w/:
Wood stock
Monte carlo cheek piece
Ebony fore end tip
Skip-line checkering
Iron sight holes (filled with screws)
See-thu rings (no scope)
Skinny hunting-weight barre - 24"?l
80pct blueing, maybe
Leather sling, I think.

The bolt is smooth and clean.
Bore was hard to see
Clearly seen some use.

It *looked* to me like it only had one locking ug??
I didn't try the trigger and couldn't figure out how to get the bolt out.

Price was $400.

Oh, I'd snake the bore and take a better look first.
the light in there is lousy for a peek down a long narrow bore.
I'll take your assessment under advisement, tho, thanks.
I'd not be surprised if there's a $100 new England premium over SC prices.
Bleh.

I agree with Al, $300 tops around here as well.

I saw one a few months ago at a local gun shop that I sure would have bought had I been needing a hunting rifle. It was a nice used 700 BDL in .270 Win, very good condition with a nice shiny bore and a Nikon scope, for $399!

Admittedly that's a great price (with a Nikon), but I have seen rifles like that out there.

To remove the bolt, there is a small button in front of the trigger. Push that button in while pulling the bolt back and it should come right out. The bolt should have two locking lugs; check them for galling.

All that said, if it's in good shape mechanically with a good bore and you can talk them down a little, I guess you can't go too far wrong if it's what you really want.

I used to have friends who would buy and sell their guns all the time and they really worried about getting the very best deal, to the last penny. I've come to realize that I don't need a whole bunch of guns, and I only buy what I really want, then never sell it. A couple decades down the road I'll still have it, probably still like it, and it really won't matter if I paid $50 too much for it.

first, make sure it has 2 locking lugs. if not, avoid the gun at any cost.

second, assuming this is a non-j-lock gun, or if the j-lock has already been replaced and it has 2 lugs, and if they keep the rings, i'd price it at $350.

if they make you take the rings, $325.

700 adl's are not hard to find, expensive rifles. they are solid hunting rifles, though.

It'd be a 350-375.00 rifle around here, as mentioned deduct another 25.00 for accepting it with the rings.

Remington 700 bare actions are bringing 300-325.00 pretty easily

80% bluing is the key. Takes a lot of use or misuse to remove that much bluing on a rifle many only shoot a couple times a year. Sounds like a Model 700 BDL not an ADL.

I lean toward the $300-$325 number due to bluing wear if it is a BDL and $275-$300 max if ADL. It would bring an easy $450+ if clean (BDL). I pretty much would be a bit nervous about buying it with all the wear.

thanks, everyone. Maybe I'll drift back towards the old Marlin 336 on the same rack.
