I've shot a Berreta 92fs for several months in IPSC production. It's an OKAY gun for the purpose. I'm having a bespoke Limited gun built for me (by Pistol Dymanics) but it could be upwards of a year before it's ready. In the mean time, I want to keep shooting production but I'm ready for something better than the Berreta. Let's assume I have unlimited funds (for the moment). What pistol would you choose? What I'm looking for is what anyone in this kind of competition would want: rock solid reliability and exceptional accuracy. If you guys help me develop a short list, the 'feel' is up to me.

Keep in mind it HAS to be a DA/SA design and might as well be 9mm as everything is scored minor in Production.

I have thought about using a .45 1911 in the new 'Single Stack' but being a provisional divsion, I won't be able to register classified stages and I really want to see my classification improve over time, so I'm thinking of sticking with production until my Limited gun is ready.

Thanks!

Why does it have to be DA/SA? If you are limiting your choice by that requirement, then you can do ok with a Sig 228, H&K USP, and I think maybe a CZ. If you want to expand your horizons a bit, I reccomend you check out either a Glock 17 or a 34. 9mm, kind of DA only, but no safety. I'll say this, I didn't much care for Glocks for a lot of years, but you really can't go wreong with what most people shoot in USPSA Production. I picked up an LDA in 9mm, and truth be told, I think I should have stuck with a Glock 34. It would have been cheaper initially, and 10 round Glock mags do not cost $50 each. I borroweda friend's G34 for a local Glock match last year, and while I was practicing with it, made B in Production with it.

I've just started shooting Production with a Smith & Wesson MP9, with a 10-8 Performance rear/SpeedShooters 0.100" front sight, home-built trigger job*, and ISMI 13-pound recoil spring. I like it a lot, it seems to flip less than my Limited Glock shooting minor ammo, the trigger is easier to manipulate at high speed, and so on. Try one out.

* - I followed Dan Burwell's instructions, but did all the cutting and polishing using a home-made insert for my Power Custom Series I stoning fixture. You can do an equally good job freehand if you're careful.

eflatminor,

I find it hard to use the Beretta 92fs in IPSC production because of its
manual safety and double action, i.e. you have to suffer a DA first shot
and undo the safety.

How do you like it?

sargenv:
I hadn't thought about DA only guns, which I suppose Glocks and the LDA are. That's worth considering - thanks.

I don't like the DA on first shot either! The safety doesn't bother me because you're allowed to have the safety off at the start signal. Overall though I think it's an acceptable weapon for defense (if underpowered) but no good for competition.

Chris
Is your S&W a DA on the first shot weapon like my Beretta?

I shoot a G17 or a G22 in Production. I will be trying the basic platform you are using now. I can't see how it will be any slower or less accurate than my Glocks but the timer will tell. IF you can get your hand on the Beretta and IF you can reach the trigger for the first DA pull I really don't think there is going to be anything better. CZ's fit my hand REALLY well, but I can't reach the trigger for the first DA shot so even though I can shoot outstandingly well with them after the first pull they provide no advantage to me because the first shot is either wasted or very slow. That brings my Glocks back to equally competitive.

The first pull sets the stage most times, and sets the mind for the rest of the stage IMO. The first pull needs to be a good one. My ONLY complaint about the Beretta as a competition gun is the durability of the gun, the guys that use them hard have told me that the life expectancy of them is about 50K rounds or a little less.

Why not just shoot the Beretta? Your time and effort spent on a new gun, holster, mags, etc could be used practicing with the Beretta. Don't let me talk you out of a new gun or anything, but you could do a lot worse than your current blaster. If you gotta have something different then look at a G17. They are plentiful used and everything you ever wanted for them is available.

I shoot a G34 in USPSA production. I have only shot Glocks since I started shooting USPSA last year. The Glocks seem to be the favored gun in production here in Indiana (I don't know about everywhere else) and I believe it is due to the fact that it is DA but every pull of the trigger is the same. The only thing I have done to my 34 is polish on some parts to smooth out the trigger, add a Dawson Precision FO front sight, a Heinie slant pro rear, and some grip tape. I'm currently using a Blade-tech DOH for my holster. This all seems to work very well for me but YMMV!

CZ SP01 would be and is my choice.

Contact Matt Mink at czshooters.com or Angus Hobdell at ghostholster.com Both of these guys shoot for team CZ. They can built you an excellent production SP01.

the beretta can be made into a pretty decent shooter..install a lighter hammer spring and some decent sights..and it will do well..

I shoot a SP01 that has been worked over by Matt Mink..and it fantastic..
good balance and weight . heavier than the Glock, XD and MP guns.

my DA break at 6# and SA breaks at 1.5#..nice sights and really really accurate..

We have several people shooting Glocks (G17 and G34) in our club as well as the XDs...and they all do well to..

I am really new to this USPSA thing . I own a P95dc Ruger which is not discussed alot .I am going to watch an indoor shoot 3/11 to get some idea how it works. I want to be able to enjoy shooting and be competing against My 13 year old son:banghead: Any help would be nice

THANKS

Ruger is a solid gun..
get yourself a holster, some mag pouches and some extra mags..

for USPSA production, at least 4 or 5 mags..more is better..mag pouches to carry at least four on your belt. and you are good to go.

you will also be set for IDPA..

enjoy the sport..it is fun...

I shoot the M&P .40 for production and love it. Had a trigger job done by Burwell and it's amazing. Reset is really short now and the trigger pull is around 3lbs. My son shoots it just about as fast as he shoots Limited class...except for the increase in reloads. I really like the M&P and reload 180 grn over 4 grns of titegroup...really low recoil.
