Forgive me, I'm a complete noob when it comes to this. I used to "hunt" with my dad (climb around the mountain while he dozed by the fire) when I was a kid, and have accompanied my brother on unsuccessful archery hunts but have never gotten a tag myself. I just got the email that I drew muzzleloader buck deer... Do I need to do anything else? Will they mail me my tag? Do I need to buy another general hunting licence/permit/combination thing or is the tag the only thing I need? I have attempted to find answers on the utah DWR site with no success.

Thanks for your patience.

BTW I have a .50 CVA Hawken and a .50 Lyman Great Plains. No modern frontstuffers.

On the tag, they'll mail it to you. You should get it in a couple of weeks. If you don't have a small game license, something is wrong because you have to have that before they'll let you apply. It can be in the form of a standalone license or a combination license. They may have charged you for the small game license during the application process. It doesn't matter if it SGL expires prior to the hunt, you just had to have it for application.

About the other stuff to do:

Scouting.

Practice shooting.

That's about it.

I drew out for the rifle hunt. I know what you're talking about with the hunts when you were younger. My dad used to take us on every deer hunt. He had his trusty Spanish M44 Mauser (now in a much better place.... My gun safe. :) ) and never shot a thing. He told us a couple of years ago that the only reason he took us with him was because we made so much noise that he'd never have to ruin a good hunt by having to clean a deer. According to him, any deer that got within range with all of us noisy kids around was either deaf or to dumb to be left in the gene pool.
