V Notch Express Sights - Are They Any Good and How do They Stack up Against Peeps?

Peep sights suck for use in the field, especially in low light. If its a gun that will see field use, I'd go express or notch sights all the way.

And yet people use them all the time. IMHO, barrel mounted sights are infinitely inferior to a good receiver sight for any purpose, other than fast shooting up close.

You really think it's easier to use barrel mounted sights than a ghost ring in low light?

Peep sights are more accurate at longer range. However a shooter that knows his rifle and has plenty of practice can be very accurate with open sights.

My uncle farmed and ranched in western Kansas and he carried a 30-30 Winchester 94 everyday around the farm since my dad bought it for him as a gift in the 50's. He shot everything with that rifle using open sights around his 10 section property from rabbits to deer, badgers to coyotes so he had lots of practice. If you ever been on the great plains you have an idea of flat lands and the ranges can and will shoot at in the flat lands.

In the late 60's early 70's the game department had introduced antelope into western Kansas and held their first hunting season. He had drawn a tag for that hunt and there was antelope all over his property. The game dept. came out with a couple other tag holders to take pictures and write an article for their magazine about the hunt.

The first bunch of antelope they came across took off running. My uncle told the other hunters to take their shot but they thought that the antelope where too far away or it was too difficult a shot so my uncle dropped one at around 450-500 yds paced with that Winchester 94 while it was on the run.

Now conventional internet wisdom would be that his story was an exaggeration but I read the magazine article that had his picture with the antelope and holding his rifle. The warden had paced the distance from where he made his shot to the dead animal at over 500 paces all documented and witnessed. Now its been some 40 + years since I'd read the article and heard the story but that was how I remember it as it suck in my memory. The right person with the right skills can hit what they aim at with open sights at incredible distances.

Just read Jack O'Conner's works folks. He killed more game, dangerous game, with open sights, peeps, express sights, scopes, than everyone here at this forum combined.

Sorry Sir, but that is not a correct statement.
